Powdercoating

Hi I have a fully assembled Viper trans. I know I should have thought of it earlier but , can this be powder coated like it is and then use infrared lights on it . Or will that still damage it. I would remove all the rubber and electrical parts ? And the throw out bearing .Thanks for your help in advance Wayne

I was talking to the local shop about doing my hole car. He said they have to bring the car to 700 DEG. He said it is so hot that all the led undercoating paint would burn off. I would not try it.

Have any of you guys tried to powdercoat your grill. I want to do it to my 68 Nova to get the blacked out SS look.

I they are heating powdercoat to 700 degrees then its gonna burn.
Most of the powdercaoting products I have priced to do my own are rated to flow at the 400-450 degree range.
I also looked into either building or having a custom oven built and the general range is it doesnt need to go over 500 degrees.
There used to be a few super high heat coatings but the EPA put the dump on them as they had some nasty heavymetal base.
BUT I still wouldnt put an assembled trans through that.
dissassembly is required and complete cleaning to get it to stick.
Now according to a friend of mine he used a heat gun and some of Eastmans low heat stuff the do some small pieces.
I am not sure how good it would look but it might save a tear down.

Don't know how well you trust this guy, but most powder cures at around 400 degrees.
That being said, the eastwood lead filler will go plastic at this temperature.

Thanks for the info. I will look into it closer when I get to that point. Paint and finishes still a ways off.

Eastwoods site recomend high temp lab metal for under powder coating .

Having powder coated engine parts in the past, I would stay away from powder coating an assembled trans. I powder coated a set of motorcycle cylinder heads and the valve seals dropped out due to the differences in thermal expansion of the seat and aluminum head.
