Some one told me that AUTOZONE (the commercial end) sells remanufactured BIG BLOCKS that are correct for any year. Has anyone got a motor from AUTOZONE? How are they quality wise? They advertise a 396/325 hp big block for a 69 camaro or 69 chevelle. Warranted for 1 yr and lifetime on all the parts?

I was told the same thing about 400 small blocks. My Auto zone listed a 350 as a replacement for the 400 and I needed a core.

I doubt Autozone has machinist. I'm sure they buy their motors from engine suppliers (remanufacturers) the same way Advance / Discount Auto Parts / Pep Boys and others do. I quit installing those after 2 customers brought me engines and both had problems, but that was over 10 years ago so hopefully they found some better suppliers / builders.

For all but a stock replacement I would stay away. You will probably end up with a 060" over block with a 30-30 crank. Recon engines make a performance line that you may want to check into. I know at one point you could even get Pontiacs with E-heads and new Eagle cranks. While not top of the line stuff these were selling for less than $6500. Which isn't bad for a rebuilt Pontiac with a warranty, new crank, Forged pistons, good rods, and e-heads/intake. You have to figure that the heads are a $1600 expense. You may want to check into them. I think Carquest handles them.
