So a local guy I know has several 400 small block blocks. He knows I know my stuff when it comes to stereo work, so he said that he would trade me a block for a stereo. Can you guys help me figure out what a 400 block would be worth? He said 600 bucks...I dunno if I believe that.

Also, would it be smarter, bucks-to-power-wise, to just build up a smaller small block?

$600 for a bare block with no machine work or with machine work?

I wouldnt pay more that $150 for a bare block with no machine work done.

As for bang for buck if you start off with a bare 350 block and a bare 400 block it will not cost very much more to do the 400. The crank with the 400 mains will cost a little more in some cases but thats where the added costs end.

Last week I bought a short block 350 from sdpc (http://www.sdparts.com/) for $800 shipped. 1 piece rear seal, PM rods, 4 bolt mains production block. 400's are hard to find. But I'd rather do a 383 with a 350 block.

A little extra grinding you can do a 396 with a 350 block.

But the 400 at the right price will be better and add a 3.875 crank for a 420 cid

Before ultimatley deciding on a MoTown block, I had a great 400 block, fully machined, like new (literally). It sold for about $550.

So you just trade him a stereo that cost you 150 and tell him it's worth 600 . . . .

I think 600 is steep, mabye complete running 400.I traded a used edelbrock 600cfm carb for mine.Id rather build a 400 then a 350 or 383 not a hole lot of price diff at all and more stoke and piston.
