I have decided to go with a Quadrajet carburetor for two reasons, one and most importantly I will be using the factory ram air set up on my 72 PONCHO and was told that a Holley would not fit with out some serious work to the air cleaner base, The second reason is that a friend of mine advised me that when setup right these carbs run great.
So my question is who is the right person to send or buy a Quadrajet carburetor from? Thanks.

The best currently is Cliff Ruggles. He is often over at PY online forums. He actually only does Q-jets. But the downside is that his turn around time is long because of his great work.

Another high quality choice is a gentleman who goes by "shaker455" on those same boards. His first name is Jeff. And he is building my carb up here in Massachusetts. Check them out you will be very pleased.

72,
Cliff is a personal friend and if he is too busy I would be glad to do it.

You might want to buy his book and try it yourself. I believe he also sells the parts too.

From everything I have read and heard, and I read alot, Cliff is the only way to go.

You may want to send him one and use a second one temporarily, if you need one right away.

I have yet to hear of anything but rave reviews on his work.

Will a Q-JET carberator be able to feed my 400 stroker or am I asking too much from it? I am having second thoughts about building a Q-Jet, I wanted to use one again because of my ram air set up but I dont know if it will perform. The motor will be a stroker 400 pontiac which should be putting out in the range of 500 HP and 600 lb of torque.

Shouldn't be a problem. Again, go to the PY boards and look up Cliff Ruggles. He runs a 455 Ventura with about 500 hp or so, and with a qjet and iron intake. Tons of torque.

72,
You have a PM.

I'm currently building a 400 stroker and a 428 for two poeple and one is Hectore3....I'm building a custom Holley 850 downleg and annular for these two.

I don't know all your engine specs but in some cases a Qjet is not well suted.

72 Goat,
You have a new PM
I tried to return your call at the number you left but it was not in service.

I know3 of 3 Pontiacs pushing well over 600hp (former super stocks) on Qjets.
If you need the extra airflow over the old factory castings I believe Edelbrock still sells them and I know they have one in the 800-850 cfm if not bigger.
With adjustable part throttle(the components freed up and working properly) and a well adjusted secondary makes one sweet carb and if you are running a Pontiac you dont need stratospheric RPM to make power.
Build it for low speed air flow, keep the port velocities up and the engine will make gobs of torque.
Good luck
Lee

If you need more cfm from your Q-jet, removing the choke plate on an 800 Q-jet is good for approximately 40 cfm.

Thanks guy's for your input and advise. I think it is safe to say that I will be able to use a Q-JET. I need to now decide who I will use.

The Q-jet is one of the best carbs ever designed, it is probably the best all around carb. The Q-jet will handle making tons of the power on many differnet combinations, just look at all the super stocker cars at the drags that use the jet and get deep into the 10's. Q-jets biggest flaw is that the float bowl is too small and it is easy to suck it dry, and the big needle and seat can have trouble keep up with a really serious engine.

I have never been a fan the Holley on the street, I get tired of wait for them to warm up so not to blow power valves (yes I have a PV protection they don't always work), and the fact that they just don't hold a tune to my liking. The AFB style of carbs run great until there is any serious cornering G load. I have thought about a redesigned Q-jet that would address it's issues and make it more user friendly to the masses.

My Cliffs Quadrajet handles my 462 without any trouble.
Ditto on the removing the choke. No need for a choke.
I do use a A.C. solenoid to bump up the rpm when cold. It fires up without any trouble.

Hey Qship I have never had a working choke on my Holleys and rarely have them pop at all. Ususally I just wear out P valves and even in coldest day I dont have poping problems and I usually stat it let it warm up about a minute or 2 and go.
As for Edelbrocks/Carters I have never had a problem with cornering.

What is the deal with the Summit JET Q-Jet. It states that it is for Chevy only, will it work with a Pontiac Eddie intake?

Got to be calabrated for your engine.

The motor is stock as it sits, but again like we talked about it will get a rebuild. I do not know when I will get to this and I want to switch to a Q-Jet and the summit price seems very good, so what needs to be done right now.

I think I'll buy a Q-Jet from you or Cliff instead. I do not have a Q-Jet to send so I will need a price if you can help, thanks Dave.

Cliff did my Q-jet for $350 a few years ago. It was dead on when I dyno'd the car later. That's the no core price.
