OK well here's the sitrep: My 402 block may be shot, I will know for sure Monday probably after the machine shop gets done with it. It has a big scour in one cylinder wall. The block is already bored over .060. The machine shop is trying to see if we can get by with honing and re-ringing it. They don't want to sleeve that one cylinder by itself because they say it will likely cause overheating problems. (Does that sound right?) So if we can't just re-ring the pistons, I would need to bore the block again and get a whole new set of pistons. That is IF I can go bigger than .060 on this block. They don't know yet. :fingersx:
If I need a whole new set of pistons anyway, I figure I "might as well" upgrade to a 454 block. There is a guy in my area who has a block and crank only that he wants to sell.
Assuming I end up getting this 454:
1. What should I pay for the 454 block and crank alone?
2. What should I be looking for in the block? (Casting #'s, etc.)
3. Since I need new pistons, would it be advisable to go bigger and overbore it, and to what bore size?
4. Can I reuse the connecting rods from my 402 for the 454?
5. What would it take to make it into a big-inch stroker motor? Is that a wise thing to do for a daily-driven car?
6. Should I be planning on buying a complete balanced rotating assembly for the build?
That's a lot of questions, I know, but I am stuck in Italy and my questions about Big Chevy's draw blank stares. It's amazing I was able to find a 454 block here at all. Any advice I can get is like gold at this point...:help:
