So I wake up this morning and start my day as usual. Little did I know that I was going to get an e-mail telling about the death of a good friend from the SyTy BB. David has also been a member of this board since Nov 2004 and has posted many times.

While working on his truck last night it seems that the vehicle he was working on fell on him and when his wife returned home she found him and he had already passed.

I promise to add extra safety to the deal when my car is off the ground. I use jackstands in excess, but will now make sure that my cement-filled cinder blocks are in position under the frame rails to give me some room to breathe should the big earthquake hit...

This has been one of those day's that has made me think about life and how fast it can be taken away from us. I will no longer take a chance when i am working under my trucks. I'll make sure i put wheel blocks behind and in front of the tires every time i jack up my ride. I've never thought about using a cinder just in case but it sure does make sense. You can never be to safe.

Thank you all for the kind words for Dave. I am doing what he would do when he couldn't sleep. Post on here. Only thing is he isn't in bed waiting on me. What I am supposed to do without him? I made them let me lay down beside him before they took him away from me . I just wanted to hold him. I can't do this , I am not supposed to be doing this. I loved this man more than I loved life itself. Somebody please , please come tell me he isn't really gone. I am gonna bring his ashes home with me. I think it only fitting that his turbo girl give him a kick ass ride in the Syclone.

We will be recieving friends today at Oakey's in Vinton VA from 6-8pm.

I am devastated to hear this news, he was a good guy and a great asset to Pro-Touring.com. He will be sorely missed around here. My condolences to his wife and extended family. We will keep them in our prayers.

As a fellow SyTy guy and one who has met Dave in person a couple times and talked to him many times, I know we lost a great guy.

It does amaze me at how the automotive guys have teamed up though to help out our fallen friend in more ways than one. Dave is proud to be part of our automotive group and I am sure telling everybody where he is now some more funny stories.

Might not be common knowledge here, but even before this Dave even had his own smiley on the syty board. How many members can you say have that?

Larry thank you very much. Just a quick update we have raised over $7,000 for his wife. I no money can't replace the loss of a love one but it can at least help pay the bills.

I also agree - we need to start a saftey section with tips. On the s10 BB one of the guy's alway's puts a set of extra stands under the trans crossmember just in case.

Make sure you use the four legged jackstands, not the three leg tube type. And heavier rated stands are more stable plus you can raise the car higher which is more confortable.

I had the wheels chocked also but had kicked the rear chock away while crawling around under the car. The only thing that saved me was a floor jack I had under the rear that didn't allow the frame to completely smash my head, just got a concussion. I finished my shop, poured a floor, and bought a car lift after that.

Dang, I just saw this post. I am very sorry for the family. I can't imagine seeing my wife, my best friend and the most important thing to me, laying there when I got home. Keep faith.

I had a 91 firebird kick out from 4 jackstands a few months ago. I had just got out from underneath it checking the starter. I opened up the door and was under the dash and then got out and was just standing there when one of the jackstands either broke or kicked sideways and it went down. The jackstand was a "AC Delco" 4 legger. God was watching out for me that night.

A friend of mine taught me the nudge method. Before you get under it, nudge it a couple times with your hip. If something is not right, hopefully that's the time it falls off the stand rather than when you're under it. I also leave the jack underneath when possible as added insurance.

I think one important thing is to not get in a hurry, take time for safety. It just takes a fiew extra minutes to insure the car is up safely or to put some extra stands or blocks underneath. Not leaving a jack handle in the way to trip over or even tossing out frayed extension cords and bad tools that can break. I had a brother in law that had a cheap wrench break while pulling super hard on it. When it snapped, he stabbed himself with the broken end of the wrench!

I had an employee show up at work one day and he was missing a front tooth, he'd been cleaning car parts in the garage with gasoline, was overcome by the fumes and did a nose-plant on the floor!

Pinches, cuts, scrapes can all be reduced by taking just a little more time. Plus when you go to the tool store pick up some safety glasses, work gloves, oil absorbent (kitty litter) - things that you need on hand to keep your workspace and you clean and safe. There's nothing like getting under your car and having a piece of grit fall in your eye and having to go to emergency to get it removed. You can't use safety equipment if you don't have it handy and that invites unsafe actions. I also have a good emergency kit and bottles of saline eye wash in my shop.

Don't forget fire extinguishers, I pull one out and have it close by when starting an engine for the first time or when I dump fuel in a carb to prime it. The regular sized 10 lb fire extinguishers will discharge in about 15 seconds, so they don't last long at all, get a larger one to protect your shop. Don't have Combustable items anywhere near your welding area.

I'll have to admit, I am quite a safety lunatic. Whenever I jack the car up, I plan on it being up for some time. I put ramps under all the wheels and lower it down. Then I stick 2 jackstands under the rear axles and two under the frame rails between the tire and front bumper. I then finish with a hydra-jack under the rear differential pig and one under the sub-frame crossmember. Yeah, it's overkill....but I ain't changing for nobody.

Dave, here is another reason for safety glasses – drum brakes. At one of our stores (I used to run a tire & service place like a Firestone or Goodyear) we had a guy put a drum brake spring through his eye. At least I learned how to roll my own eyelid back to removed debris (the ER doc taught me that) – I can’t fix my eyeball.

When I used to set vehicles on the lifts at work (single posts, 2 posts, even the swing jacks on the alignment rack), I’d shake it just after I got all 4 wheels off the ground an inch or so. I wanted to make sure I didn’t have a customer car/van truck slide off (I’ve seen that). I plan on moving in the next few years to get a bigger garage to support a lift. Mine is not tall/wide enough. I spent $1000 on a new compressor - $3k or less installed for a lift seems like a no-brainer at this point.

I was under my 77 all day Saturday installing SFC. This topic rang through my head all day. Every time I came out I gave the car a shake.

In 1982 I had to work on my 67 Camaro I had at the time and was in my dad's gravel driveway. I put the car up on the ramps and chocked the rear wheels. Opened the hood and did something, don't remember what it was but it required a wrench that got left on the air cleaner. While lifting the car and settling it on the ramps I left the floor jack underneath it. Not because it was the safe thing to do but because dragging it around on the gravel was a pain. While under the car ,I believe it was a header leak but not sure? The wrench slides off the air cleaner and falls right on the soleniod and the main lug:eek: The car moved a couple of turns of the starter and fortunately it was in reverse( what I was always told to put a parked car on a hill in) and I left the jack under the car. I don't know how that floor jack rolled with the car in gravel but it did. Now I leave the jacks under the car and throw a tire under it too.

The shaking the car part is a definate have to do part here.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLE !!!!!!!!!!!

I keep telling myself that I will need to get me a 12 volt supply to the ECU when the battery gets disconnected for service. Just enough to run a computer but not a starter will be just right :fingersx:

Be safe always, when it doesn't seem right? IT ISN'T!!!! Stop and think! Follow thru with something different if you have to.

It's easier to do the job safe the first time than remember it forever!
