What made you pick the musclecar you have or are working on right now?

I chose my car because there are so few of them in the grand scope of the hobby. One of the last cars from the sixty's that are cheap and many parts are readily available for. Granted. It's not a *muscle car* but as pro-touring fodder, it's better. factory unibody structure, 4 wheel independent suspension and better power to weight ratio than a vette of the same year.
Corvairs are great conversation starters too. Im SHOCKED how many people have owned one.
I've got a running, lowered cool fun to drive car, and it's cost me less than 3 grand total so far. Impossible for any other car from the era.

When I decided to buy a car I looked around what was available and what I liked.... I also checked which parts were available and parts prices, that led me to a Chevy. Then I looked at Chevelles, El Caminos and Camaros.
I really liked the early 2nd gen's but was not too mad about the RS....but the more I looked at them the more I started to like the RS.
When I made my decision I looked at a lot of cars and the one I have now was the best I could find then at a (for overhere) reasonable price.
It just went wrong when I started to read HotRod and CHP and found PT.com when it just started.
It snowballed from there and now my scope has changed a few times, I'm into my 2nd build and the money I spent is about 3 or 4 times I intended to spend.

There are several reasons but the main reason is that I like to cheer for the underdog or better yet be a witness to an underdog kicking some hind end. Lemme explain....
Before everybody and their brother owned a truck for daily commuting and family hauling trucks were just a beat up work horse and if anyone saw one actually competing at a track they were laughed at to some extent. Now keeping in mind my first sentence above about under dogs nothing puts a smile on my face like kicking some elitist snobs automotive hind end with a hay hauler...not to mention doing it with a "only" a V6 which is just icing on the cake (or salt in the wound depending on how you look at it).
So, with that being said I picked what is argueably the quickest truck made (yes I know, the lightening mph'ed faster) after seeing the motor trend episode on tv years ago where a Syclone trounced a ferrari in the quarter mile. I dont need a ferrari/automotive penis extension so I went and bought myself a fast truck....and Ive been dumping money in it ever since LOL.
Thats my story and Im sticking to it.

A picked a first gen camaro because it will be a challenge. Pretty much anything you can think of has already been done to a first gen maro. I want to do something different. I fig'd the 1st gen fbody would be the toughest platform to do that with. Plus the dimesions of the car are probably the most desireable of all gm muscle cars for handling and performance driving. With the exception of the C2 corvette.

My first car ever was a red '69 Camaro. Bought it when I turned 15 for $1200 cash. That was 1987. To this day, 1969 Camaros are still my favorite car.
To you guys with children, see what happens when your child gets a cool car for his/her first car, instead of a crapbox Civic? lol

A 1968 Dodge Charger... honestly, I thought it was the most beautiful shape to ever come out of the muscle car era.

I got my license in 1990, and grew up down the street from a few motorheads. One of them had a '72 Chevelle SS, and bought a brand-new Monte Carlo SS in 1988 for a daily driver. I really thought it was a great-looking (and sounding) car.
I wound up buying first SS in '91. It was an '85 with 100K on it. I sold that one in '94, but bought it back in '97. I've had at least one Monte SS in my stable since then! The G-body Monte is a cheap, reliable platform that looks great and can be made to perform. What's not to love!

Basically I bought mine when I was 16 and i liked the design and I could see the potential. I paid $750 back in 94 (damn thing would not even roll, we had to drag it on a trailer, completely restored it to the best of my abilities, which being only 16-17 was a big task. After the years the car has basically become a part of the family, I know every square inch of it. Now that I am smarter and have more money, the car is disassembled again, awaiting a rebirth...

I'd always wanted a 'vette or a 4th gen, loved them both, thought one of the two was for me, until one fateful night. I was driving around with my girlfriend, perusing the used car lots like we (I?) loved to do after a movie or whenever we (I?) got bored, and there she sat, absolutely beautiful. Next day I dumped the girl and bought the car. Best decision of my life x2.

I fell in love with a British Green 68 Z28 that would drive by our H.S., my first car ended up being a 67 Camaro I bought when I was 15. For this build I was open minded about any make or model, after looking for about a month I ended up specifically looking for a 69 Camaro hardtop, I found it 2 days after my 67 was shipped to its new owner. ( the 67 was not my first car, but I had owned it for 14 years )

I got lucky....mine was a Hand-Me-Down. Originally owned by my Grandmother, it then transferred over to my Mom for a few years and she signed it over to me as my high school graduation present. It's been in my family since day one and I've been the owner for nearly 18 years now. Wow, how time flies.
I couldn't afford the $2800 428CJ 69 Mustang in 1985, although I did test drive it.
I found my 69 RS on-base in 29 Palms when I was going to training.
I had always liked the RS front-end, so, for $1500 and a being a very good solid driver, I couldn't pass it up.

You know, I could have gotten a '73 Camaro instead of the '77 I have now. In hindsight, only for the fact that it's emissions exempt and gives me a slight bit of leeway on choice of power plant, it would have been the better deal. BUT.... My car is a lot like me. The ugly duckling. Great on the inside, and it will perform with the best, but nobody seems to like it. Well, at least that's how I felt a few years ago. It's still different though and I love it. I'm building my own car, my way. I don't care what others think. And I'm constantly asked "Why the big bumper car?". I just answer "Because I feel like it".

Let’s see….
My 1st car was a 1976 Camaro LT, and I co-owned a 1977 Z28 in HS, so there is a bond there. I tripped on my 77 Z28 in August of ’05. I was quietly prowling for a near-driver shape car to use while I worked on the 67. I looked at this car, saw brand new GM quarters, a 4-speed and driver quality paint and I bought it on the spot. And promptly took it apart Nov ’05 (all started by a clutch issue). So much for the ‘driver’. 90 days until Memorial Day weekend, 120 days to GM Carlisle….
The 1967RS – well, I had 2 2nd gens and at the time was tooling around in a modified 1982 Trans Am – but I grew tired of it (too bad, I wish I still had it). The 4th gens were too new (i.e. too much $$$) - plus I didn’t really like them. So I started looking for a solid 1st gen, because I never had one. I like 67 best of the 1st gens. 69 Camaros are so ‘me too’. LOL How sad, this is coming on 10 years ago. I gotta get to work.
It's still different though and I love it. I'm building my own car, my way. I don't care what others think. And I'm constantly asked "Why the big bumper car?". I just answer "Because I feel like it".Big bumpers uber alles!
… I dumped the girl and bought the car. Best decision of my life x2.I bought my 67RS with (what I told myself was) engagement ring money. That beotch is long off the radar (luckily I later found a keeper who lets me play with toys), but I still have the car...

Hmm, let's go through the list:
71 SS chevelle - Mother was the original owner and bought it new after choosing the options and color she wanted from Groth Brothers in Livermore. Restored it/learned when I was 15 with Dad. Became my daily driver through HS then was passed to my little Bro through his HS years. After college I did a full resto on it for mom.
64 Chevelle SS - Picked it up at 17 from a co-worker of my Dad's (mom was selling it cus the kid got caught StRacing it too many times). It got a full frame off, 350 w/N20, 700r4, 4 wheel discs, and lots of custom work.
67 Nova - Uncle picked it up as a shell to put C4 vette suspension under it. Put on hold as a side project for his 71 camaro PT project. I took it off his hands and built it on a rotissorie and made it a roller before selling it and moving to Italy.
68 Camaro - Friend's co-worker had it for a few years and was a basket case wanting to get rid of it. Too good of a deal to pass up with all the parts and having a solid base. Again, did all the fab work/body work and sold it as a roller.
That's it for the one's I've owned...

I had a 76 Falcon XB (my number 1 dream car) sold out from under me after I put money down on it, and rather than trying to have one found in Australia I started looking at picks 2 and 3, 67/68 Firebird and 69/70 Mustang fastbacks respectively. Well everyone did some horrible hackjobs at restoring every Firebird I looked at and my Mach came up on the VMF, an original rust free CA car and all I had to do was drive to Chicago to get it. So I have a Mustang! Although I'll still trade it for that Falcon...

I think it was an evil plan by my parents (both gearheads). They gave me a wrecked 68 camaro when I was 14 and they gave me the body panels and such to fix it. Funny thing is I still have the car 20 years later and am getting ready to pull it apart for another restore....

I have wanted to build a hot rodded 2nd-gen f-body ever since I was about 14 years old and my cousin drove up in his newly-acquired '79 Trans Am. I just thought his car was so cool. I later bought that car from him, and still own it (needs resto). I later owned a beater '81 camaro and installed a 396 BBC engine in it. I later junked the car, but kept the engine--it is the same motor that is in my current car. I enjoy muscle cars, but don't care for the lousy handling characteristics and huge, heavy bodies on a lot of the older muscle. The 2nd gen f-cars seemed like the best of both worlds to me, combining old-school muscle and great performance (after some upgrades, of course).
I bought my current project car "the bandit" '80 Trans Am because it was an original California car, and in great overall shape. It was also a WS6 SE car. It had 4-wheel disk brakes from the factory. It was clear that it had potential, even though it had the puny Pontiac 301 4-barrel engine. I figured it would be a great candidate for a big block engine swap. I planned on modifying the car from day one, but it took me a few years to get started. The PT machine I have now is the result of lots of blood, sweat, and beers over the last 3 years or so, and it is still far from finished!

First car was a beautiful 65 Fastback, but needed to0 many mods to fit real tires and wheels. Next came a 69 Nova, cool car but gave it away (glass tilt front end too). Next was a 68 Charger, one of the best of the era, got it to 145 mph once, but sold it for nothing...
Needing to reach back to the 60's/early-70's I decided I wanted a fast handling car, so a late-C2/early-C3 Vette seemed like the best choice (this was back in 1985). Not able to handle the 2-seater aspect, I figured a 2nd Gen Camaro was the next best thing as far as body shape/curves and similar options for handling. I got my 71 Camaro when I was 21 (did not like Camaro's much until then).
I have had some great times in 2nd Gen's when I was a teenager, including driving one awesome RS custom everything that a local girl's dad got her (wealthy contractor). I traded favors for seat time, and had a blast, even though I only had a permit. What a car, got pulled over once with a keg in the back seat, right in front of the local arcade, figured it would be extremely embarrassing since I didn't have a license and all of the kids in my resort town were right there, but the cop only mentioned the keg, wanted to make sure it wasn't tapped/in use. I looked extra studly after that encounter!
22 years later I am still in the middle of it all, wondering when it will be a driver again (hoping this summer to drive it out of the garage for the first time in 5 years). Thunderhill is my goal, for various types of driving classes. And of course awesome day trips with a buddy or my son.
I have learned through it all that the trip is what it is all about, not just the destination!!!

When I bought my house I had a couple of guys paint the inside before we moved in. The painters helper saw me moving all my tools into the garage and asked if I knew how to work on cars. He told me he had sheared the pinion gear trying to bunny hop the front wheels on his 68 Firebird and asked if I could swap in a rear end for him. I told him to bring it buy with a rear end and I could knock it out in an afternoon. The car sat in my driveway for two months but he couldn't come up with the cash for a rear end. He didn't have a car and I had a 1990 Subaru wagon I had bought for $500 bucks with a blown motor and had another $600 in a used motor, belts, hoses, ect. He asked if I would trade strait accross for the Firebird, who was I to say no. I've since fallen in love with it and can't ever imagine selling it.

When I was a paper boy the guy down the street had a '68 SS RS Convertible Camaro and I though it was the coolest thing ever. I would talk to him as long as he would let me every time he was working on it in the driveway while I was delivering papers. So I saved my pennies and when I was 15 found a '68 Camaro Convertible in the Want Ad for $800. It was an incomplete piece of...but it was mine. 20 years later, after many moves, endless ideas, tons of cash and never giving up on it I will finally complete the project this Spring.
when i was 17 in 72 my dad had a 63 vette that he drove as a daily,he put studded snow tires on it and sand bags in the back and drove it in cleveland all year long,in 73 i bought it from him and hot rodded it out,i loved that car and all the fun i had in it,in 98 i bought my second and have had about 5 more since, something about a midyear roadster near the ocean the only thing better might be a pro touring mid year roadster, soon to come thanks to frank at prodigy.my dad is gone but never forgotten on a1a at sunset.

I have always wanted a GM A-body from 1968 - 1972. I love the curves, the presence, the look and feel of the car.
Specifically why a 68 GTO, Chevelles are expensive and common. Olds and Buicks are also rare in the tri-state area. I wanted a rare car, so I started pricing them out, I was leaning more towards GTO's as each year is diferent and the history behind them.
It took two and a half years to raise the funds to acquire a car. I tried to get a car for $2 - $3k but Ebay drives the price up. I looked locally but most were rust buckets or out of my price range. So I saved money and paid off the new daily driver. I had chosen a 68 or 69 GTO long before the new punisher came out. I started biding on Ebay but was out bid until December 2005. I had her shipped home and discovered that she needed a little more body work than was advertised but overall I did end up with a decent car.

when I was 13 I rode in my uncles 70 chevelle. I had never been in a muscle car before. It was loud, uncomfortable (3000rpm @ 60mph on a 45min trip)... and fast. I loved it. He lit them up going up the onramp, and I knew I wanted one.
When I was 18 I bought my uncles car.

I had a book on muscle cars, and in there I thought the black '65 GTO was absolutely gorgeous. When I was 20 I couldn't quite score a GTO, so I got my white '65 Tempest. In a way I like it better; cheap, plain, clean, and sneaky.
An issue of Car Craft a few years back had a story on demo derbies, and they had a shot of an Imperial *airborne*, and said how they dominate those events, and I thought that was the coolest thing ever. I got my latest '71 Imperial for cheap on eBay and it's such a big, fun, menacing car with leather seats. It's fast. And I love tinkering on a 440.
I got my '03 Z06 cause it looks good in black :twothumbs

I didnt really choose my car(69 Chevelle), it sort of chose me. When I was 15 I was working as a waitor saving money for the first car. I had thoughts of a regular cab silverado, when my mom and dad came up with the idea of my dad and I going half and half on repairs and restoration on this old car stored in the shop. Man... thinkin back I had no idea what I was getting into or what it would lead to. I got to know my dad(step-father) and learn about the hobby all at the same time while working on that car. We finally got it going about a month before I graduated. At that point it was 4-wheel drums, open-diff, bench seat, etc. It was mine, it was loud, and i thought it was great. I cant imagine ever getting rid of it for anything. House, girl, whatever, all be damned.

I've always loved american metal and have owned/worked on/rebuilt many. As much as I loved the Chevy II's I had never owned one or even ridden one until one day a friend had called me to help him put a 350 into his II. after we got it dialed in he took me for a ride. WOW! the power to weight ratio was awesome and, right there, I decided I wanted one but it handled like crap so I decided to try and build one with both power and handling.

I choose my 78 t/a for several reasons. First when I was about 8 or 9, my father pickd me up from camp in a customer's silver/red 79 ta (he's a mechanic and it needed to be road tested). all I can remember was being pushed into the seat, wheel spin and excitement. I later found out that the car had a worked 455 (used to get away from smokey during the owner's night time runs dealing 'goods'), which caused the wheel spin, not my father hot rodding a customer's car. It was a stick too. We tried to located taht car and teh owner to no avail. fast foward and 13 t/a's later of various 1970's years, I found my current one which has a similar history to the orignal one I rode in back when I was kid. I like the looks of the 78/77. I also like 911's and 930's which made me combine the 78 w/ excellent susp. upgrades to achieve porschelike cornering. I figured it would be cheaper, but cost is quickly approching that of a 930, however I will have a nice sleeper and the joy of showing up a 'higher status" car will make the cost worthwhile.

He always told me the stories of kicking a$$ on anything that tried messing with the ol Dart. He bought a 71 Challenger R/T when I was 13 (for $2,500!) now I have a 71 Duster and a 73 cuda. Dad got my brother and I hooked on the Dukes of Hazzard, and we fell in love with the style. He surprised us one day after school when I was 13 or so with a 69 base charger that ended up being rustier than anything. Eventually we found a true R/T and started the restoration. Dad passed in 2005 but Me, my brother, and a whole handful of amazing guys around Winnipeg are going to finish it pro-touring style.

I was stuck driving a POS '84 Mustang GT after my '66 mustang was wrecked (rear ended @ 50 mph and tweaked the rear frames). I was driving home one day when I saw the '69 sitting in front of a tow yard with a For Sale sign on it. Needless to say I was drawn in immediately. next day my wallet was $6,000 lighter but my heart was happier and it was a more dependable daily driver for 5 years than my '84 had been for 10 months. I am going on 10 years owning it now and couldn't be happier.

Went with my dad to a muscle car showroom and the guy let me sit in a '69 Chevelle that he was warming up. I was about 15 and had never sat in a car that was so visceral, the whole car was shaking (lumpy cam). I was hooked, and had to have one. i cant really give a good reason for that question. i mean growing up my buds all drooled over porsches and ferraris etc. I loved plymouth dusters, must be the small package and big engine compartment, and 71 was the year i was born and just knew it was cool for my car to be as old as i am. I've ended up with everything in my current collection because it was cheap; 67 Satellite $800, 72 D200 $1000, 74 Challenger $800, 74 Satellite $1200, 80 Aspen $50. That also makes it easier to dump money into them without being upside down from the start, should I ever want to sell.
With my current situation, I may be unloading two or three of those.
Other sub $1000 cars I've had in the last 20 years; about half a dozen 66-67 Mopar B bodies, a couple 71 Satellites, a couple 69 Satellites, half a dozen Dodge trucks from the 70s, early 70s Pontiac Tempest, a few mid 70s novas, a few second gen Firebirds, a 54 Chevy, an Olds starfire, a couple Vegas (with and without V8s).

I stumbled upon mine in the news paper two years ago. Got the itch for an old Muscle car, and began looking. Found the 1968 Barracuda Formula-S and had no idea what it was. Just that it was different then all the Fords and Chevy's around. I like different.
Ended up calling multiple times on this car, and finally going to see it one day. The guy apparently got several offers for his asking price. After taking it for a test drive, and discussing it the next day at dinner.. I called him up, and he said he'd much rather have me own the car.
Apparently he liked the idea of a young guy owning it to love it and fix it, versus people trying to make a quick buck and spin it around since its a "rare" mopar.
All in all, it's brought me MUCH pleasure and fun, and I'll never ...ever.. sell it.

I always wanted a '69 Camaro going back to my high school days, but never could afford one. Now that I have the "means" to buy one, the prices have gone crazy high, as we all know. So I started looking at Firebirds about a year ago. I acquired my 69 Firebird project back in July and I am now glad I have a Bird, as they are different and still relatively uncommon...But I still like the nose of the Camaro better. :ssst:

I got my 1971 Camaro for my 16th birthday present. I had saved up 1.5k and my parents said they'd match it so I could buy my first car, saw the ad it was painted blue and ran(barley) me and my dad told my mom we were going to go see a Honda and came back with the Camaro on a tow truck, by the look on her face I can tell she wanted to kill my dad and me lol. He taught me all he knew which wasn't a lot but it was enough to make me want to learn more now 3 years later I've rebuilt the motor myself, am doing all the body work and paint myself and even got an ls3 for it. At 19 I'm blessed to have this car and amazing parents who may not have a lot but help me out and support me a lot

I wanted a 80-85 El Camino but it seems as though people have a value on those cars that is WAY WAY out of reality. Searched for months but couldn't find out that wasn't clapped out, rusted or been torn apart. So expanded my search and lo and behold, I found a 67. I already have a 67 Chevelle, and its nice to have a project that I have a ton of stuff that fits. Wasn't planned, but kind of cool to have a Chevelle and El Camino of the same year.

My 66 Mustang came about because I've always thought the 1st gen Mustang coupes were underappreciated, and usually don't get much respect as builds go, so I wanted to build one that got people's attention, and made people take a second look at these cars. Based off my reception at the cruise nights, I've definitely succeeded. (I still need to post finished pics in my build thread before you all look).
All my other cars have their stories as well.

I wanted a Pontiac Astra Safari but those are hard to find so I looked at Monzas and Vegas and stumbled on an AMC Spirit. Didn't like the kambacks so just settled on the regular hatch. These are fun little cars.

That's funny. One of my other cars I have is a 75 Pontiac Astre GT that I didn't intent to buy. A local salvage yard owner died, and they were having an estate sale for everything. While everyone was flocking and overpaying for the Camaros and such, I was able to get this Astre, a 76 Astre, and a 75 Vega for $70 a piece. For the prices I couldn't pass them up. This was 10 years ago. My GT is restored, and is my drag car. The 76 is patiently waiting for its turn.

There is one on sale for 1500 miles away from me today. If I had a garage I'd pick it up.
