Is it OK to use Hot Rolled steel for a crossmember?

I as wondering is it OK to use Hot Rolled Steel 2X4 for a crossmember? I have read that you supposed to use only cold rolled steel for roll cages and other stuff, but the steel supply I called said that in 2X4 he can only get it in Hot Rolled. Opinions please.

Oh and 1/8 or 3/8 thick, which one?

hot rolled is fine. My entire chassis is 2x4x1/8" *hot rolled*

You sure don't need 3/8. Get the 2x4x.125.

Or ... better yet, call Morrison (http://www.artmorrison.com) and get the good stuff. They've got what you need in stock.
