This isnt a real emergency, but wasnt sure where to post otherwise...
Yesterday we changed the oil in my Chevelle and tried to fire it up. We got a couple of backfires through the carb. The timing appeared to be way off so I set it back at the recommended 12 deg advance. Still got the backfires. Adjusted mixture screws out and still backfired through carb, and never started. I am thinking maybe the distributor is out 180??? Will I hurt anything if I change it and try to start the car again?
The last time we cranked it we heard a whooosh sound about 10 seconds after we let off the key, like presure releasing. My friend thought maybe it was just the shocks or something. I didnt think much of it at the time.
A few mins later he says wow, there is a huge leak, its oil all over the floor of the garage. I am thinking the filter wasnt on tight enough. It was too messy to tell for sure, but we saw oil dripping from the filter and nowhere else. I doubt there is much oil left in the car, but will check later today.
So, anyone have any other ideas on the backfires? Should I be more concerned about the oil leak if it is only coming from the fitler?
