I have a friend who wants to ither build or by a motor but he is concerned about going to big on the cam and having to replace the valve springs regularly. Is there a level or size area that gives good performance without a lot of regularly needed maintinance. He has looked at several different companies offerings for crate motors and gets concerned when they only come with a 2000 mile worranty. He wants performance but would like to be able to just drop the motor in and not have to be taking it apart every winter.

There are a few factors at work here. Suffice to say that anything that is not a solid roller will probably last for a pretty long time these days.
I would say that the line is around .600 lift and 7500RPM where you really have to start watching valvesprings closely.
