What to do in Nashville, Tennessee.

This April the wife and I will celebrate 10 years. She is a huge country music fan and has always wanted to visit Nashville, so I'm going to take her there for our 10th. Has anyone ever been there? Besides the Grand Ole Opry, what else is there to do besides that? Any museums, cultural stuff. What hotel do you recommend to be close to everything. And more importantly, what restraunts are a "can't miss"? Thanks.

Tony - Was there last year and went down to Lynchburg to the Jack Daniel's distillery and museum. Was one of the neatest things I have ever seen. Free of charge to boot.:yeah: Cool thing to see even if you don't drink. Takes about an hour from Nashville and is a very pretty ride through the country.

My wife and I went there last fall. It was nice out, so we pretty much just walked the stip and hit the bars.

If I can find it again, I had a list of restraunt that have open mic night. Some of them are famous for get the new up-coming stars and having current stars pop in.
Lynchburg is a great little town (dry county).

I live in McMinnville about an hour and fifteen minutes from Nashville. My wife and I went and stayed at the Gaylord Opryland hotel for our anniversary. The hotel has all kinds of stuff in it to do. There is a very good italian restaurant inside the hotel as well as an excellent steak house. The gondola rides through the river in the hotel are very nice. There is the country music hall of fame, Grand Ole Opry, Opry Mills mall is right next door.

I live about 1 hour from Nashville. For hotels you will not find much nicer than the Hermitage:

It is right downtown overlooking the capital. You will be within walking distance of Broadway Street, The Raimen Theater, The Alley. The Frist Center is also a great place to visit:

I'm about two hours west of Nashville (we almost have it surrounded). You might also check the Busch and Craftsman Truck schedules, there is usually a race in April at the Nashville Superspeedway, if you like that sort of thing as much as I do. As far as historical places, The Hermitage, home of Andrew Jackson, was pretty interesting the last time I was there. It's hard to beat the downtown area on a Friday or Saturday night, seems like everyplace has a band.

1st and foremost, the Best Toy Store in the South, Phillip's Toy Mart in Belle Meade (West Nashville)! We have been in business since 1946 in Nashville. A little self promotion here. But truly an amazing place. Lot's of people from out of town make a point of coming to the store when they are in town. A lot like FAO Shwartz when they were open in NY.

The Frist Center for the Cultural Arts.

The Tennessee Performing Arts Center

The Parthenon, 130 years old and exact full size replica of one in Greece

The Country Music Hall of Fame

The RCA Studio

Breakfast at Loveless Cafe, out near where I live in West Nashville. Known Nationwide and a Nashville Landmark.

Civil War Battlefield in Franklin Tn. The bloodiest of the war

Corvette Musuem 60 miles away

Mamouth Cave 80 miles away

Opryland Hotel, Rooms are basic and expensive but the hotel and setting is fabulous. A lot out of the way for everything to do except the Big Ass Redneck Mall (next door). It is still a great choice and a fun experience. This is the largest hotel in the world that is NOT associated with a casino.

Hilton Downtown

The Hermitage Hotel. Old Hotel downtown remodeled and fabulous! This place is REALLY COOL!

Hotel at the old Nashville Train Station is very nice and near downtown. Also Very Cool!

All the same chain hotels as every other city if you are on a budget.

I was recently in Nashville. Stopped in at The Stage for a beer. The bartender ended up giving me and my friend free VIP tickets to a hockey game across the street. Free beer and food all night. Needless to say we went back to the bar and thanked her. Sometimes going a little unscripted can be fun too!
