For my next project/daily driver I'm looking at a friend's 1995 M3, I can pick it up for quite a bargain as it needs a few repairs. He has all the parts sitting in boxes to do the repairs, but has no time or motivation to fool with it. My plan would to get it back to like-new condition, daily drive it a while, then do an LSX/T56 swap. I've tossed around alot of new project ideas, but this car does most of what I want a car to do without having to turn a wrench on it, it's very affordable now, and I'd consider it a 'classic' design that will never lose its appeal. It would cost a small fortune to bring a true classic muscle car up to the same all around standards.
Not to mention, 3100lbs + 400rwhp = :6gears:

These were pretty much 'pro-touring' from the factory, except that they were a bit lacking in the HP department. Handling, braking, interior quality and comfort are still awsome even by 2007 standards though. Is this too new of a vehicle to be called 'pro-touring'? It is 12 years old after all. :)

Yeah I've also briefly toyed with the idea of the turbo, but reaching 400rwhp with the BMW 3 litre is going to be expensive and unreliable. 400rwhp with an ls1 is easy and you still have an engine that will run 100k miles and get mpg in the mid-high 20's.
The overall cost of the ls1 swap vs. turbo BMW is close, but probably a little cheaper in favor of the ls1 swap.

Pro-touring or not, it would still be a cool project. Except I would start with an even cheaper E30 based car if I were going the LSx route. Along with the couple threads from LS1tech, www.bimmerforums.com (http://www.bimmerforums.com) has a hybrid/engine swap forum too.

My next car will be a E36 M3 too.

"another would this be pro-touring thread"

And another "who cares" response. If you dig it, do it!

I don't know if I'd call it pro-touring, but it sounds like a fun project. I've gotta say though, those cars are already pretty capable from the get-go and doing a engine swap seems a touch sacriligious. Certainly there are plenty of well built E36s out there as proof of their potential.
