Hey guys, I have just sourced out an ORIGINAL #'s matching '68 GT-500 Mustang Fastback locally. It's a numbers match car (orig 428 motor & tranny) and the owner is the 3rd owner had it since 1980. It was repainted in '83. Color is red with white stripes. It's non restored and currently a driver. No major rust from speaking with him.

What's this car worth in as is condition and what is worth restored?

you might compare against some of the other cars on the internet, such as:

http://www.cars-on-line.com/shelby.html

the recent BJ is good for top-end, but I doubt many of those were driver condition.

re: "numbers matching' ... I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think Ford started putting VINs
on engines, transmissions, etc. until after 1968. I can't recall the original date.
You could have partial information tags:

http://www.428cobrajet.org/id-engine-codes.html

but not a full VIN.

this site tracks recent resale values:

http://www.nvsaac.com/

lots of other good info there too.

also note: GT-500 == 428 Police Interceptor (PI)
GT-500 KR == 428 cobra jet (mid year addition)

KRs will fetch more $ than a "plain" GT-500

If you want to email me the Shelby number, I'll look the car up in the registry and let you know what you have. You can find lots of info on these cars. What's he asking?

Where do I find the Shelby # and what sort of documentation should I look for? Also, from what I'm figure it's not a KR model, just the plain GT500. The guy wants a decent amount for the car, I'm trying to see if it's worth it or not.

Nice find Rybar!! Hopefully the guys asking price is worth your investment.

Isn't the 428PI motor using different heads than the 428CJ motors?

Post your question on www.vintage-mustang.com (http://www.vintage-mustang.com) and other Shelby boards. Just don't give out too much info on it's location, somebody might swipe it out from under your nose!

Thanks for the heads up, the asking price is pretty steep. I'm going to go take a closer look sometime this week and let you guys know.

Shelby put a couple of tags on their car. The easiest one to find is under the hood, just inside the drivers side fender. You can find lots of info on the car but to see the history of what the car has been through, you need to look in the SAAC registry. I almost bought one of these in similar condition about a year ago. It might not have been as nice because this wasn't really drivable but, it didn't have any rust. Solid car, he wanted $65k. I was beat to the punch.

He's asking $77K Cdn for it = ~$65K US. I'm going to look at it this week, take some pics and get that Shelby #

Do you guys think it's worth it?

$65k for a complete car sounds like a good deal. maybe not a *crazy* good deal, but
certainly not a bad deal. esp. if it is enjoyable / cruisable as is, and resto can occur
later.

check those shock towers & torque boxes...

Just a humble opinion...get some help from someone that you can validate REALLY knows Shelby's and see if you can get them to go with you.

I don't know anywhere near enough about those cars to comment on how good of a "deal" the $65K US is, but I do know that it is a very large sum of cash. If I was considering outlaying that amount of money based on a car's heritage, I would want to be an expert on the lineage or have one with me.

There is a ton of misrepresentation going on in the classic car industry right now and I hate to hear about people getting burned, especially in that price range.

Watch a few end on Ebay and you may also get a better idea on what they are selling for. But in my .02 if the car is complete, real and roadworthy driving $65K aint bad.

$65K is not bad if it is a true driver and it is what he says it is. I have a guy that I used for my Shelby and he paid $60k for his 67 GT500 and it wasn't a driver. He also has about 5 other Shelby Mustangs and an original 427 Cobra race car so the guy knows his Shelbys. Let me know when you get the vin and I will look it up in SAAC and let you know what they report. Good luck, very cool find.
