So I sold my 69 pontiac leemans a while back and I picked up a 67 camaro. First a little about the car. I bought it as a roller, I mean this thing was totally stripped. No drivetrain, no interior, no electrical, no nothing. Just a unibody with a subrframe a 12 bolt and a fiberglass front end. It was an old drag car. It was originally a 6cyl manual (3spd I believe) car.
I bought the car because the body has virtually no rust on it. Honestly you'd have to see it in person to believe it. In fact the only rust I have found is on the rear wheel openings. The was due purely because the previous owner was a hack, seriously if you saw some of the junk that was on this car when I got it you woulda laughed. The 12 bolt is from a 68-72 Chevelle, obviuosly too wide for the F body. Instead of narrowing the rear to fit the 29 x 10.5in slicks he just cut about a 0.25in off the rear quarter around the wheel opening then fiberglassed it all to look like it was done right. This is gonna be one of the first things to be addressed but atleast I dont have to replace the quarters.
So I am just finally getting started on the project, but here is what I have planned. Since the car was a 6cyl and has no original parts left I will feel no guilt cutting it up. I am gonna do a full tubular space frame chassis. Also I want to cut the roof off and make it a permanent roadster. Double A-arm ifs and irs (c5 transaxle 6spd manual of course). I want to try and use a 6cyl grand national turbo motor. (for several reasons that I'll discuss later) I know there is a bellhousing out for these motors that claims it will fit all gm manual transmissoin, I guess will see.
I am an aerospace engineer, I work for The Boeing Company in philadelphia. I have been working on designing the chassis and suspension on and off for the last two years now. I have good fabrication skills. I am an average backyard welder but a good friend of mine is a certified welder and I helped him built his 70 Cehevelle a while back so he owes me some favors. I have access to machine and metal shops at work. Actually we have a car club at work and all the guys have hotrods and muscle cars, so its a great resource to have.
My goal is to build a PT roadster camaro that can perform on a road course on a reasonable budget, around $20k. Well I will post updates from time to time as things get under way, thogh I must admitt I just dont have the time or money to finish the project in 6 months, so it will be a work in progress I am guessing for the next 2 years. I am going to be doing everything myself in my garage, with a lot of help from friends and other car guys. It always helps to have others pitch in a hand hear and there. Anyway here are some pics of the unibody up on a rotisserie in my garage. Dont mind the shifter kart.
