I don't know if this subject has been covered before or not, but I've been casually checking out the new '69 Camaro coupe bodies from Dynacorn and noticed that the fine print says "for off highway or display purposes only."
If a person was to buy one of these bodies but did not currently own a Camaro, how would you get a VIN for it and what year would it be registered as? Will a build like this fall into "kit car" status? :dunno:
Thanks.

I would just find a car thats really really bad, buy it w/title and vin tag and switch um.. Then sell whatever parts you can off the car. I'm not sure if its legal or what the recomended way is!

That would be a felony. A firewall swap might keep you off the chain gang though.

all states are different about how you can do this best thing to do is check with your local state..some state you are allowed to rebody a car if its unfixable..i know alot are doing the latter and buying scrap cars and revining..only illegal if ya get caught..lol..

Here in Az they are registerd as special builds. One of the guys here in the shop built a 32 lowboy and it came with a MSO from Speedway. I would check with your local laws

It could be done as a kit/ homemade vehicle. The laws regarding them do vary from state to state.

Why not buy a body with all the metal replaced, repaired and ready to paint, with a real VIN and pedigree. I have a 68 avaiable right now, and a possibly a 69 coming

Hi Frank,
How stripped down are these cars and more importantly, what price range would these cars be in? Thanks.

I went the "new shell" route as Frank suggests. I happened to have a guy that specializes in 1st Gen Shells only 15 minutes from me (Tony at www.musclecarmetal.com (http://www.musclecarmetal.com)). He sells shells for in the $9K range on eBay and will also give you an additional $1K discount if you supply your own "carcass."
As Frank mentioned, the cool thing about this is you get a real car back with VIN and title and you can even retain your original car if you have a "carcass" to supply.
Here's the before (after Tony stripped it):

And the after:

There are over 200 pics of the process on my website .

Wow, that looks pretty nice. I think I may have read something about this guy in a magazine. Does he only do it back to stock or can he mini tub it and smooth the fire wall in the process?

I know he advertises in one of the major car mags, but I am not sure which one.
He had one shell when I was there that had the smooth firewall and I asked him about mini tubs (I was considering this) and he said he would do that too. So I believe he'll do both. He also did mention wanting to do more "customizations" upon request.

Cool. Before I do anything I need to sell my Vette - I've had it since '92 and have lost the passion for it. Once it's gone (provided a get the right amount of $) I can start figuring out what I want to replace it with. The Camaro shell sounds like it could be a lot of fun to build something from scratch the way I want it. Thanks for the info.

Thanks Frank for opening this up!!! It made better sence to me to rebody a org. car with vin#s already than to try to work with the goverment to get vin#s on a car that didnt come with any!!
Not to step on Franks addy here but we also have a body with new sheet metal an mini tubed 1969 camaro.
Sorry Frank hope you dont mind.

I have 3 1/2 67 67-68 Camaro convertibles. One 67 has a complete sheetmetal replacement as needed and will be finished soon. A second 68 is also buildable.
They are available if anyone is looking!
