View Full Version : LED lights in production
(Mods: I wasn't sure where to put this post, feel free to move it if you need to)
Hi everyone,
I've received a lot of emails and PM's lately from you asking if we had LED Lights for your specific applications, that I thought I'd provide you with glimpse into what's going on in our R&D Department regarding LED's. This list shows what's available; what's in production; and what's currently being designed in terms of LED Lighting. Please remember the prices shown are NOT dealer pricing - simply MSRP.
I hope this helps!

Some dates may change depending on the testing phase of each project. Please keep that in mind.
3/22/07 EDIT: These lights are no longer available through American Autowire. More information about this product line can be found here:

I'm wondering if those 70-70 Camaro RS front lights would work with a 74-77 model? I think they are basically the same. If so, I'd be interested.

Hi.
I replied to your PM. I'd make a safe guess at April/May, but I'll know more as we progress with development.

We'll never get 74-77 tail lights... :(

That's alright. We already know we're not important. At least there's the "cheap" L.E.D.'s that we can substitute with. I've been using them for a few years.

Not so fast...
Actually, I was going to talk to you at the Camaros.net lunch thing on 2/3 to ask you about using your housings for some R&D if you have an extra set, since you're local. We'll make 74-77's, it's just a matter of "when" not "if".
I'll see you on the 2nd. The owner is coming with me, also. We'll talk then.

Once we tackle the manufacturing requirements of the list above, we can add more to the list. I'll forward your request to R&D. :)

:twothumbs I know you are ... I can take it. :twothumbs
Each light system take a good bit of testing, re-testing, and triple testing. It's kind of hard to rush it. But, we know there are a lot of you who want them, so we're going as fast as we can.

What exactly are these LED front lights I see for 68-69 Novas? Actual headlights or turn signal/marker lights?
Matt
The LED lights you're asking about are going to be Turn Signal/Marker lights.
For headlights, there's the Bright Driver Headlights (http://www.americanautowire.com/products/Lights_and_Bulbs.cfm):
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
*Fits 1967-81 Camaro, 1971-75 Chevelle, 1968-75 Nova, 1964-75 Chevrolet Trucks, and 1970-76 Pontiac Firebirds.
Headlight assembly contains:
2-headlight reflectors, 2-locking rings, 2-9007 halogen bulbs, 2-pigtails with OE connectors, as well as connectors and terminals for easy connection to any existing harness.
This kit features two “Bright Driver” headlight reflector bodies and halogen bulbs made complete by the addition of the correct factory connectors and pigtail assembly for easy connection to any 2-7” bulb headlight system. What makes this even better is that they are a direct replacement for the common glass sealed beam headlight with no additional mounting hardware necessary. Completed assembly is lighter than the stock glass bulb by nearly a pound. The bulb and connectors are weather tight to prevent lamp leakage and connector corrosion. There is a Gore-Tex vent applied to the top of the headlight’s reflector body to allow water vapor to evaporate increasing the life of all components. The reflector & lens is produced from polycarbonate which is up to 30 times more impact resistant than its glass counterpart.

Are the marker lights orange like the stock ones?

For us guys with the more obscure projects that wouldn't be profitable to develop kits for, do you sell the LED's themselves? I saw the section of the webpage where you sell some LED's but it was unclear if they were just for things like indicator lights, or if they were appropriate for use as taillights, turn signals, etc.

If you have an obscure model and you'd like to have LED tail lights for it, contact this guy:
John Delke

He can make a custom set for you but you need to provide him with your lens and bucket assembly so he can build the board. His prices aren't bad either. I ordered a set for my El Camino. :bananna2:
Check him out.
Herb,
Thank you so much for posting that. I was scrambling this morning trying to find a source for Travis to call and was coming up empty.
Travis,
Our LED lights wouldn't work for your application because they're engineered to mount into circuit boards that are computer designed and cut out to specific dimensions.
There's a logic chip that has a burned-in code so the LEDS know what to do when they get a signal. For the unit assemblies to work, they need to figure out whether they are getting a turn, brake, or running light signal from the car. Unfortunately, they can't be just mounted on some surface and have power applied to them. The bulbs online are just that - replacement bulbs.

No problemo.
I hope it doesn't appear that I was trying to steal your business away, but for the guys with unusual rides, sometimes the small/low volume business that can do custom stuff is the only option.

I was actually interested in tinkering around with it myself; I am just looking for a source of high quality/high intensity LEDs, such as those they use in some of the newer cars these days. Do they only come in clear, or can you get red and amber as well?
I've tried the drop-in 1157 replacements in other vehicles, and IMO they were just plain dangerous for use in tail lights during the day. They never made it out of my driveway. I have used them in front turn signal applications with clear lenses, but again in the daylight they tended to get washed out pretty badly.

BTW, I need a catalog. I need to start plotting the 67, and I need a headlight harness for the 77.

Semi-Educated shot in the dark here; are the Luxeon line of LED's sufficient for projects like this?

I'm not sure if that question was directed to me, but we are unfamiliar with the Luxeon line of products so I can't answer your question. Perhaps others can... Sorry.

It was directed at anyone who'd listen, lol.
I almost think it would be a safe assumption, since they claim to have the highest luminosity, and cost $2-$4 a piece rather than 50-60 cents the generics go for.

I hope the 71-72 chevelle kit will include white reverse lamps as well b/c no one else has them. ( Just my 2 cents: its stupid to get led taillights when you have 4 lights only 2 of which you can get in LED) Just a thought, but thanks for the list u posted

Hey Martin,
Go here: http://www.spaghettiengineering.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=33
it seems that as of this past week american autowire has sold the led taillight part of the business. description sounds interesting, but I'd have to wait and see it before buying. Simple led bulbs might be better than the "animated" ones.

We are a dealer for them and have a price on them, but will need to check and see if they are available yet. When they took over, I was told 2-4 weeks before shipments began and that was a week ago. Price is $209 and I have them 10% off right now.

Just got off the phone with the company owner and the 70-73 Camaro LED's are being prototyped right now. Should be available in 4-6 weeks. If they are like the others, the pigtail kits will require splicing into your harness or if they get a full rear light wire harness made it will be plug and play.
