9" Question

Is this strong enough for the street, or is it strictly for race?

Kind've interested in the weight savings.


Also, is there any advantage to building a 9" yourself (welding the axle tubes to the center housing? welding the axle housing ends on).

My car ('76 Chevy Malibu) doesn't have a lot of "off the shelf" stuff, so I'd have to have a 9" shortened, build one myself, or order one from someplace like Currie, Mosier, or Strange based on my specs. Just weighing my options.

I would think this is plenty strong for the street, otherwise companies like Chris Alston wouldn't sell their FAB9 with bracketry for all the common applications (tri-five, camaros, a-bodies, etc.). If someone didn't give me an older 9" housing for free I'd have gone with a setup like the one you're looking at. You can always put a brace on it for extra strength too. Probably the nicest thing about these housings is that the axles tubes are straight... if you get an older housing who's to tell it wasn't abused over the last 30 years and might need the tubes straightened.

It should be strong enough. To weld one together yourself you will need a housing fixture to line everything up. The housing fixtures are around $500 for a basic one, but it is a must.
