They buried a brand new 1957 Plymouth in 1957, to be unearthed this year 2007. They had a contest to guess the population in Tulsa in 2007. One Lucky person who got close to the answer will win the car.

Hahahaha from that article:
The car's glove compartment contains two other interesting items: a parking ticket (unpaid!) and a boftle of tranquilizers. Depending an the Belvedere's condition, the tranquilizers may be the most important part of the package.

I'll be interested to see how well it's concrete tomb held up over the 50 years. If there are no cracks in it (which is highly unlikely) then it will be in good condition. However, if there are some cracks then it's a safe bet that water got in there and it could get ugly. What a neat story though. I'll be sure to bookmark this event so I can watch.
it will be a big pile of rust! I doubt they dampproofed the outside of the foundation so moisturwe will still get in. will be cool to see though.

It would have been impossible to steal it. It was buried in front of a municipal building in plain view of the entire town.
Of course...they could have tunneled from underneath.
I'm going to have to agree with Chet in that moisture probably bleed through the concrete and has been wrecking havoc these past 50 years.

I doubt it matter what they wrapped it in considering it's been sitting in 3+ feet of water for who knows how long...
Note the rust rings around the vault and the crud on top of the plastic. Looks like it's mostly submerged at least once.
trapin
06-13-2007, 06:51 PM
Yep...poor thing. I don't know that it's been submerged, that crud that you see on top of it is probably that stuff the workers were pumping into it before they put the lid on in 1957. You'll have to watch the video. I'm not sure what it was. The water that's in there is rain water. They should have capped the vault with the lid instead of having it just lay on top and leaving a horizontal seam for water to get in.
I'll bet it don't smell too good either. Damn. Oh well...maybe it won't be all that bad like Steve says. But it's not looking good.
Here's the big question though...........will they bury another car for the next Jubilee? I think they should.

06-13-2007, 07:59 PM
if they do bury another one, I hope they think it through a little better. Concrete would have to be out. It would be cool for them to bury a "top of the line" something. Since it was a plymouth fury what equates to that in today's world? a chrysler 300? or a Viper?
Ralph LoGrasso
06-13-2007, 08:05 PM
If they do it again, they should fill the entire vault with that expanding foam stuff. Basically they would brick the car inside the foam, seal the outside of the foam with something that is water-proof (maybe a coating of something, an then shrink wrap on top of that). I think that would preserve it.
trapin
06-14-2007, 06:15 AM
I'm surprised that the engineers didn't plan for water retention. I'm sure it was obvious back then that water could seep through concrete. And the cover should have been a one piece instead of 3 with all those seams. It's too bad. All they had to do was prop the car up a few feet and change the lid design to a one piece that encapsulated the edges and there might have been minimal if any water damage.
That's a good idea with the foam. All they'd have to do is wrap the car with a plastic tarp all around and then hit the tomb with the expanding foam making sure to get every open cavity around the car. If it's a water-proof foam then you wouldn't have to seal it with anything.
As far as burying another car. I'd vote for either a Z06 (like Matt said) or a Cadillac STS-V or XLR-V.
Or bury a Toyota Camry so people can see what a Japanese car used to look like before they all rusted away and became landfill fodder. LOL!!!!

Workers are dismayed to find water in Belvedere's container
The vault in which Tulsa buried a Plymouth Belvedere 50 years ago was built to withstand a nuclear attack.
Water, apparently, not so much.
Workers lifted the vault's lid Wednesday morning to find about 2 feet of standing water and indications the vault may have been filled to the rim sometime during the past half-century.
Despite the discovery, organizers said late Wednesday that they think the car may be in reasonably good shape.
"It's not a rust bucket," said Art Couch of W.N. Couch Construction, after he and Jim Taylor of Taylor Crane examined the steel skid on which the car rests.
"We felt the sides of the car and it's solid," Couch said.
The Plymouth will remain encased in several layers of purportedly water-tight material until Friday, when it is taken from the vault east of the Tulsa County Courthouse and to the Convention Center Area.
On Wednesday morning, its trademark tailfins were clearly visible under the coverings, but hopes for recovering the car in something like pristine condition faded.
"It's sad, really," said Tulsan Jim Brewer, who attended the Belvedere's burial on the courthouse lawn in 1957.
The condition of an accompanying time capsule, which in appearance resembles a small propane tank, was not clear on Wednesday.
On Thursday, one of Taylor's cranes will be installed on Denver Avenue and several practice lifts conducted. Couch said the steel skid under the car appeared to be sound, but a second rig will be installed for safety's sake.
Discovery of the water was particularly difficult for the scores of volunteers who have worked for more than 18 months on the car's excavation. Their chairwoman, Sharon King Davis, wiped away a tear as she surveyed the vault.
She brightened a few minutes later, though, and said, "The party goes on!"
In addition to Friday's unearthing and unveiling activities, two Tulsarama car shows featuring 500 classic automobiles and a Saturday night sock hop are scheduled for the weekend.
The possibility that water might have made its way into the vault was, in fact, not a surprise. When discussions about excavating the car began in late 2005, some sort of water damage was considered likely.
As more was learned about preparations for the car's burial in 1957, though, expectations began to rise. They were given another boost in April when an exploratory dig to one corner of the vault found no sign of damage.
And, in fact, the vault shows no obvious signs of failure. Vertical lines suggest water may have come in under the lip of the lid but don't explain why the water level shifted over time.
"I don't know how that much water got in there," Couch said. "We've dug trenches 30 feet deep in this area and not found water."
Two out-of-town visitors -- Mark J. Hash of Sutherlin, Ore., and Mark Sandwith of Victoria, Australia -- were undeterred by the Belvedere's amphibious habitat.
"I always thought it would be not perfect but not a rust heap, either," Hash said. "It looks like it's going to be somewhere in between."
Hash's 1957 Plymouth Fury -- somewhat rare because only 7,000 were made -- is entered in the invitational car show at the Civic Center.
Sandwith and his friend Andrew Sharpe have built a five-week holiday around their stop in Tulsa. They picked up a 1961 Chrysler Newport in San Francisco and plan to drive as far east as Nashville before returning to the West Coast.
"It's still a good trip," Sandwith said.
"Even if it turns out to be a rust bucket, I guess there's a moral to the story," said Tulsan Steve Walter.
And that would be?
"Something about burying your treasure," he said, a reference to Matthew 6:19: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy."
"Either that," Walter continued with a twinkle in his eye, "or the value of good French drains."

I don't think it would be nearly as cool if it was a '57 Chevy. Afterall that made damn near a billion of them and there are hardly any '57 Plymouths around. I personally think the styling on the late 50s mopars were great, but thats just my opinion. The city of Tulsa picked the 57 Plymouth Belvedere because they felt it was the most futuristic car being produced at the time. Even if there isn't much of it left it will still be very cool to see what it looks like.

There's a video up that you can watch of it's unveiling on that site but it's all messed up right now. You get 5 seconds of video and then it has to rebuffer constantly. Frustrating to watch. Perhaps they'll have it fixed later. From the pictures I saw, it looks like the poor car is trashed. You know I was talking to my Dad about this just today and he had an idea that made a lot of sense. All they had to do was install a drain in the center of the floor and link it over to a nearby sewer (which being next to a road you know there had to be one close by). It would not have been much effort to have done back then either. Of course you might have had to change the depth of the vault to coincide with the depth of the sewer. Any water that got in there would have drained out immediately over the 50 years. A simple solution that could have saved the car. Oh well...woulda, coulda, shoulda. Can't wait for the American Hot Rod episodes where they turn the whole restoration of the car into some cheeseball drama that will eventually paint Boyd out to be some kind of special guy that did a special thing. That's gonna be great fun.

I must say it was quite the site to see today. I have been waiting 13 years to see it and even though it was not pristine it was still amazing. I was really hoping something creepy would happen like the radio would come on or maybe the headlights, HA. However, with my media pass I was able to get up close, look under, and touch it and it isn't as bad as one might think. I would really love to see what it would look like if they washed it. The bumper did shine when they polished it, but they never made any attempts to polish the paint. The car is restorable. Nevertheless, it is undescribeable just how cool it was to see that car. Something that had been in the ground for 50 years and was brand new when placed there.

Its bad but the body acually does not "look" to bad. The aluminum parts and the interior are indeed shot. A good washing would tell the tale. The way the bumper shined up gives some hope.........

Well, I've seen a couple of episodes of american hotrod and they had trouble starting brand new engines so it's not that big a surprise.
