When I grew up in yonkers twenty years ago there was a the remnants of a wrecked car wrapped around a tree. The story went that a late night drage race on the aqueduct (at that time a single lane dirt road) ended with one car hitting a tree and one car tumbling down into the hudson river. The car was old and in pieces by the time I saw it, around 1973.

Yesterday I was in the area and I told my buddy mike the story, we decided to jump on our mt bikes and look for any evidence of the wrecked car. Well, probably thirty years after the accident look what we found. The legend of the car being involved in a race may be true because side marker lights had been filled, which points to some kind of customizing.

We found the speedo and oil filter by poking around in the dirt, amazing that the car and debris is still there after all this time. I would love to find out the whole story behind it.

We also found these ruins in the woods overlooking the hudson river, very creepy. When I was younger there were tales of devil worship and cults in the woods along the hudson and the untermeyer estates, campfire stuff.

When I got home a little internet poking revealed that the are we visited has long been associated with cults and the family that built it was into strange practices.

The area was later a favorite spot for yonkers least favorite son, serial killer David Berkowitz, aka the son of sam.

The lion was hand carved from a block of marble. I dont know what that compass was for, it was at the bottom of the long staircase in that big circle. I would not stand there on a full moon...

The lion is beautiful. The 3rd pic in the builiding reminded me of the cover of the 1st Sabbath record, I guess the colors & imagery and all.

From that description, it sounds like the place by Greystone train station, about halfway up the hill to the hospital (St. John's). Is that so??

I found a '69 AMX sitting in a shallow stream in the woods once. I did a few weeks of number crunching and found that it had the "go pack" option, 390 engine, factory AC, etc... found out it was paid out by an insurance company as stolen. Went back one week planning to try and get a salvage title... but somebody beat me to it.

I just checked the map, same area, wrong side of the hospital. The park is probably where that huge old wrought iron gate, with a tree growing through it, is on Warburton.

Awesome finds! Let's go back and worship some devilled eggs while singin' "The Devil Went Down to GA. Looks like a great place to do a car featuure photo shoot. Can we get cars up there?

Dunno the last guy who brought his car up there did not fare well. (see photo)

Last night I was thinking about the son of sam sitting in that stone house doing god knows what, and I got a delayed case of the willies. I grew up a few blocks from that guy. Most new yorkers can remember that summer, girls were dying their hair brown because his victims were blondes.

A guy I know was in the same cell block as Berkowitz in prison and said berkowitz was very friendly and quiet but he made your skin crawl when he did speak to you.

Judging by the dash, it looks like a 49-50 Ford to me....

My father grew up in that area. He and his buddies used to hang around up there back in the late 50's-early 60's.

Thanks Steve. For some reason that horizontal bulge/crease that passes through the gauge screamed Ford to me. The fact that it wasn't paded, had a single gauge cluster, had a center speaker location and all the postwar styling cues really narrowed down the vintage to about 4-5 years for me. I think I googled 49 Ford on the 2nd try and that photo showed up...lucky shot I guess!

Thanks, now I know what it was. That whole place has a bad vibe,a fatal crash and the ruins built by an eccentric, then throw in the serial killer connection..
