oil bath filter

K&Ns are suppose to be a type of oil bath filter right? But more often than not people let them go dry and then they don't filter so well. Has anyone though about going back to true oil bath filters? My dad '68 Jeepster has one. I was thinking it could be mounted remotely and be more like a oil bong. Am I crazy?

Nah, you haven't lost it 100% yet. You have a good question but stick with the K&N's. They're pretty reliable and easy to maintain. Oil bath filters are a pain in the butt, they leak, are a pain in the butt, hard to find filter elements for, and did I mention they're a royal pain in the butt!! Had a MGB that had one and it never stayed sealed no matter what I did.

my 58 still has one, but I have never done anything to it since i have had it! Prolly about 3000+ miles! Heck, it may still have the mud dobbers nests still in it!!??!! What are you supposed to do to them to work properly?

Imagine what would happen if you were roadracing/autocrossing/drag racing with an oil bath air cleaner? Probably end up with oil down the intake and a james bond smoke screen behind you. :slap:
Jimmy I believe all you need to do is maintain the oil level and change the oil every so often. Maybe clean the element out as well occasionally.

We have them on some older farm equipment and trucks.
Wash the assy with cleaning solvent/Naptha.

Fill to the "line" with 30 wt oil. If you encounter a lot of bumps, then fill with 40 wt oil, it sloshes less.

These filters are very heavy and bulky, and probably don't pass air that well.

I'd like to add that the K&N filter lids are dangerous, they can easily catch fire if your engine backfires.
