Car stays running and other wierd things

Guys, need ya's help once again, I put a new motor into my 69 camaro and along with it a one-wire alternator. Now when I shut the car off it does wierd things. For one the generator light is always on when everything is off. Also my electric pump stays on even after the engine shuts off and will turn off when I push the e-brake. And sometimes the engine even stays on until I do the same. Does any one have any ideas? Do I need to put a diode on the wire to the alternator. Thanks in advance.

For starters I would ensure you have at least one good ground from the engine block to the body, preferably 2 or 3. Also have a ground from the chassis to a tranny mount bolt.
Then I would ditch the one-wire setup and convert to a good 3-wire. To see why, visit this link:

Not sure if this will fix your electrical gremlins, but it will sure make your electrical system function better.

Look for wires that have been pinched from your swap

your ignition is feeding back through your voltage regulator wiring. do you still have your regulator hooked up? msd has a diode diagram for the brown wire. plus you got some funky stuff going on under your dash. Add anything down there?

I think your right, I forgot to put on my 4-guage ground back on so I'm gonna try that first.

I checked and did'nt see any pinched wires.

Check your ignition switch to make sure it's moving from the run position to the off position when you turn your car off. You may want to use a test light to verify the wiring as you move the key through the various positions. Can't explain the E-brake killing the engine though-must have a loose wire under the dash somewhere-I hate 1-wire alternators...none of them are worth a crap as far as reliability imo and experience. -Jabin

Actually the one wire alternators are a joke. As a diag tech i see a lot of people use them then have problems. also you are getting a back feed throught system and if the light is on its because you dont have the alternator sending a voltage back through the wire to it.
See the wire that feeds the light runs to the alternator/regualtor. what turns it off is voltage coming from the alternator, when the standard regualtor losses power or the alt goes out it turns the light on,,,remove the bulb if you dont use the wires.
My preference is to run a standard 10SI alternator and loop the heavy wire from the plug to the battery post on the alternator and the other regulator wire goes to 12 v key on.
Another thing is where you pick up power from for your fuel pump and remember power has to be switched off to shut the pump off.
Hooking wires up in a circuit it has to have the power circuit broke on the feed side to the pump or it will back feed. And dont forget you need a good relay for your fuel pump or it will burn up.
