I'll call the guy again. I've sent him a new filler boot that goes between the tail panel and the truck. It's being changed to fit in the boot so there is no sealing issue with exhaust fumes, rain water e.t.c. in the trunk. I hope to have news soon.

I have had a 2004 HAAS 40 X 16 TM-2, in my Dads shed, for three years; It was new when I got it? I also have a 2002 HAAS SL-10 lathe in our shed as well.

nice "shed".
Yep, no kidding? Dave Tucker; the president of HAAS came to visit my shed. He designed and built the first HAAS rotary tables in his Garage? Now he sells about 800 machines a month? You would not believe how many Haas's are in Barns. Why pay the overhead of a building? IMO. Many good machinists' buy a couple and go to work for theirselves. I am still trying to get out of my dayjob; but the two together = a lot of money! And two kids do not allow me to excell at my shop, and keep my day job?
Anyway, yes it is not a VF series Mill. A VF that size would weigh in around 12,000-14,000 lbs. My mill weighs 5700 lbs? I had to get it through 300 or 400 feet of muddy field. I could not afford to have a Padget crane take the sheds roof of and bring a VF series in from the road. The TM-2 is still a completely awsome product, just like every HAAS every made. 6000 RPM 150 IPM feedrate max. Does everything a big one does, just not quite as fast. But I run them, I program them, I design, I box the parts, I heat treat the parts, I saw the stock, I do all my own Invoices and receipts, I drove the forklift; There is little, or no overhead, at my shop. So my prices are still very reasonable.
And that makes it a very CooL "Shed"!!!!!!!!!!!!

cool... I started 11 years ago with my business partner in a 1-1/2 bay garage with a bridgeport mill and a lathe, used it for tooling work, bought a small shop (4000sq ft), then about 3-4 years ago moved up to a bigger place (~8000 sq ft), keep buying more stuff, growing, etc. I looked at the Haas, bought several prototraks, and just ordered a Hurco VM-2 40x18x18 machining center, mainly because it was built a lot heavier than the haas and has easier programming, but I do like the haas stuff.

Ouch? Touché? :enguard:
Damn that hurt??:box:
I guess I just got knocked out,lolol.
Oh well, take this:fart:
Yes, I am going for the same thing? Eventually?? I am running production for Alcoa at the moment, when my machines are paid for, I know I will be back out on my own.(4 and 1/2 years and counting!) For now the second baby and the first child; as well as the day job, keep me to damn busy!
:secret: I disagree on a HAAS being light, IMO. I also think the conversational programming is limited and more time consuming than G-Code. But I started programming in 1993, on a pad of paper with a pencil for days doing math. I have never really ran a conversation, except in my journeyman's schooling. I did not like the way it asked questions, I would rather tell the machine what to do? Not it ask me how?
I was cheap labor at the time and it taught me a great deal about what the machine needs to know. It was a small job shop and they would never have spent money for software? I got my Journeyman’s card and worked there Nine Years? Great experience!
Then I went to this mold/tooling/Space shuttle parts (the coolest thing I ever made!) Place. I learned Mastercam to a degree, but mastered feature cam to a science!:throw: I thought if I can keep three machines running for this guy, then why can’t I run three for myself? Well, here I am, waiting for the big Payback?
My Day job just bought a HAAS, TSC,300psi coolant, 50 taper VF-6 64 x 32 x 30; over 15,000 LBS. It was 180,000. Give or take. You talk about a massive machine. I may never quit because I love running that thing. It has the Reinshaw auto tool setter and work probe. That is the neatest thing I ever used. I was so against it when the boss said he ordered it, but now I believe it is as priceless as software and a computer. It has a 14 inch step in front of it, I would say about 12 feet tall? It is a MONSTER! It has the 90 degree mounted 30 position tool changer. It is so nice to have those things out of my way, for once in 14 years?:seizure:
Anyway I could go on and on but I got to work in the morning? That is B.S. I hate my dayjob!(except for the big cool haas, run one, you will never think about another mill; it is like a Cincinati in 1942, the best. Plus you are supporting a guy just like you or me. They laughed at him, (DaveTucker Pesident of HAAS), at his first machine show in 1988. He had a VF-1 that he designed and built. Now look at him, and most of the ones that were laughing, are now Bankrupt, lol)

No sword-play intended... I thought that was a cool looking shop. And the Haas are really nice-- it was one of our tougher decisions... I liked the versitility of conversational dxf converter and g-code on the Hurco, and the heavier casting, that's all. Neither are Okuma's or high end machines, but also far from the bottom of the barrell either. Wait for that payback.. it does eventually happen. Job-shops are a tough business as I'm sure you know, I found better luck with more of a product/service business, but I have several friends with pretty big shops that started just how you and I did. I was lucky enough to make the jump when I was younger and didn't have as many personal bills (mortgage!), and even then it was tough to make the jump and there have been a lot of tight years along the way. You'll make it- quality equipment is a big part of the formula and as you said, once that's paid for itself, it will make the next move eaier. Best of luck. It's always cool to chat with someone in simlar businesses to see what they are running, what they like and don't like. So, let's put our mutual talents together and see if we can get Larry what he needs, if he needs the help- that's where this all started...
Larry-- need parts?? That was kind of my initial offer- I don't mind slipping in some fun parts on nights/weekends- not looking to make a buck, just help. -Dan

They will be locking and should come with everything youy need including a template and the proper drill bit to drill a few new holes.
There will be a vent available but it will be a seperate item since not everyone will need them.
My goal is to sell as many as possible and hope to make it as close to the same price as buying a complete stock setup as I can. I hope in $199 to $220 range but that's not set in stone yet.

Larry, you're a much more patient man than I am...or than any of us are for that matter. These bozo's have had 4 years (yes...it's going on 4 years now) to make a gas cap. A gas cap, Larry.....A GAS CAP!!!!!!! I mean for the love of God already...it can't be THAT hard. Detroit Speed designed an entire sub frame and front suspension in half that time. Unacceptable...totally unacceptable.
Larry, the time has come. Pull the plug on these jokers and get Modo Innovations, Ring Bros, or Marquez Design involved. Seriously...you don't need that other company. You've got some wonderful resources here, get them involved.
Sorry for the "soap box" moment but good Lord I've been following this saga about as long as I've been following the Sopranos. It's been a long time. Too long.
Just my $.02 to go along with the other $.02 I know I've already thrown in.

Well....I can tell you this much, I need one of those caps real soon. If there is any welding, I gotta get my hands on it now so I can do the welding and put my welder up for sale so that I can buy more parts. The cap is essentially keeping my welder off the market. I know a source where I can get a cap like that that requires a little bit of welding, but I'd like to buy it from you and give you the business. If they don't require welding, then I could just sell my Miller now and wait to get one of yours. But who's to say I'm not going to be waiting another 3 or 4 years to get this thing? I may regret the day I sold the welder if it turns out I need that cap and I'm real close to getting the car running. I'm in a dilemma here. But this much is certain...this car needs one of those caps to fit the theme. I absolutely MUST have one.
You get these things produced, Larry and you're going to be in a windfall of cash. I guarantee it.
I can hold off maybe another month, but after that I gotta pull the trigger.

I spotted one of these caps in Little Rock last night on some Red 67 Camaro owned by some guy named Charley. Caps look great in person!!

Thanks and I hope to hear how it worked. It's the first real world test with many differnt gas stations and nozzles. I hope it worked well and Charley is not pissed at me. LOL!

I want to thank Larry for letting me have his prototype cap in order to get the Red Witch finished. No, it wasn't the one that was stolen at the Pro-touring dinner. It worked great and looks perfect. It filled as fast as I could fill it and was nice to have a cap that locked. My new favorite cap for my favorite car. Thanks again Larry.

There's a windfall of cash that's just waiting to get into Larry's bank account if he can get them done soon. This is probably the most anticipated component in the history of Pro-Touring.
...well, at least for us '67-'68 owners it is.
