With all this old skool NASCAR vibe going on, I was wondering if anyone had some old pics from the Trans Am series from the 60's or early seventies. I think building a Trans Am inspired Pro-touring car would be very cool.
There is a great book on early Trans-Am history with pics by David Freidman. Looks like you are doing what I did...

Asking for pictures of T/A cars has struck a nerve...watch what you ask for:eek:

Let's start with the most famous Trans-Am car of all,the '69 Championship winning Penske/Sunoco Camaro driven by Mark Donohue and currently owned by Ken Epsman (who owns the Sam Posey Challenger you see here too:

I agree that Donohue's 69 is a T/A classic, but I think Parnelli's 70 Boss may be the ultimate Trans Am racer. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Camaro guy thru and thru, but that school bus yellow Boss with Parnelli driving it harder than the Firestone's could take was just great to watch. I went to the real Trans Am every year it ran at Laguna. I remember watching PJ, Gurney, Savage, Posey, Follmer and even guys like Ron Grable in the original AMC/AMX factory effort and Milt Minter in an independant 69 Camaro. Back when racers were racers and the cars were the stars. Ah, those were the days..... By the way, where did you get those cool T/A style lugs? That IS the Trans Am look!!!! TZ

That is the approach I've taken with my Dodge. This is the first interpretation with a definate low buck approach. Your looking at $2000 worth of car. No, it isn't the fastest car I own, nor is it the best looking, but it is probably the most fun by far.

Great car, High! Is that a 'Cuda hood? I like the 70 Challenger T/A hood myself. Paint it "Sub-Lime Green" and you have a vintage Trans Am look that would make even Sam Posey green with envy! What a great ride to be drivung on the street. Good luck with your project and please keep us posted. TZ

Thanks TZ!
The hood is the stock Challenger flat hood. I picked up a cobra jet scoop at a swap meet, added some side panels to it to smooth the transition, and viola!, instant AAR hood.
I agree, I prefer the TA style hood and it will get one at its next make over. Since this was a bucks down, get it on the street exercise, the emphasis was on getting it presentable. I've since added large front spoiler of aluminum sheet that looks just like the Posey TA spoiler.
Next go round will see some 17" minilite style wheels, improved suspension geometry, engine set back and drop down, roll cage install, interior make over, some fiberglass body parts and a color change.

Have to agree with most, the Smokey Camaro is my favorite of the series. I keep a scale model of it on my computer desk. It would look good as a converted ProTouring car some 40 years later. Geez, can you believe that? Just plus size the wheels and it fits Right in here, not that it doesn't already.

you live in monterey?
sweet!
i've spent a lot of time with friends there, and in carmel.
it's my favorite place i've been yet.
sea otters and laguna seca in almost the same place.
doesn't get better then that.
Yeah...we get quite spoiled living this close to Laguna Seca too!
The "Pre-Historics" are a week before the Historics and that's a nice event with very little crowds...love that!

i'm totally envious.
we're trying to get out again in the next year to visit.
last Historics i attended was 1985, i think...coolest show i have ever, bar none, been to.

That whole wknd is a blast. If you are a car guy...Monterey is THE place to be that weekend.I usually do the Pacific Grove Rally which snakes it's way through the most beautiful roads around Pebble Beach and Asilomar.I won "Outstanding Musclecar" with my '70 SS454 two years ago...out of 250+ entries.

Here's a link to the Jerry Titus Trans Am Firebird now owned by Linda Mountanos, http://www.historictransam.com/Drivers/LindaMountanos.htm
Without intentionally trying, my car has evolved into a Firebird with the Trans Am look. It didn't really occur to me how much it looked like those cars till I got tired of making crappy #'s out of tape for NASA HPDE road track weekends and had #'s made on vinyl stickers. Now I sticker it up for track days with windshield banners etc. for track days. Sometimes I leave just the #'s on and drive it on the street like that. The parking/turn signals are now in the headlights which are protected by headlight grills so the orig park/turn openings can be used for brake ducts.

That # 31 car is cool, its the more obscure cars that interest me. Some cars may have only run a few events and then dissapeared.

OMG. the sunoco car!!! Ouch!
...Our absolute thoughts as we saw it unfold before our eyes.
Jimmy told us afterwards...as the car was drifting out of control...his only thoughts at the moment were "Not this car...God,not this car!"
I was in the paddock after the event and snapped several shots that physically make me ill to look at.I gave my word to Kenny that I would not post those pictures.
As bad as it looks, the car is being repaired as we speak (may have possibly already been completed) and knowing Ken Epsman, that car will be back as strong as ever.
Please understand these cars are being run harder then ever and being as careful as possible doesn't mean stuff doesn't/won't happen...

Been watching these cars run over the last 10-15 years or so and that was the first time I've ever seen that car run.The picture of the trim tag I posted was of this car...and it was for sale as well.I want to say $75K but I could be wrong.
It was one of the only single-4bbl cars running.
