now that I'm all confused, I feel like I just stepped out of 1989 right into 2006. I'm so behind, I completely missed LT1s! so here's what I'm curious about:
LS1 1st year in a camaro is 1998?
what's an LS6?
when did the LS2 come out? did it replace the LS1, or did they run concurrently?
what is in the 1st z06 as opposed to the new z06?
what's in the trucks, are they considered LS engines?
sorry if this sounds too pedestrian, but reading through all the posts I really feel like I'm on the outside. figured I'd post here, at least I feel more at home than on the LS1/LS2 forums (they get WAY too deep, I'm just looking for simple info).
thanks,
Keith

This is what I know:

1998 LS1 1st year,
LS6 405 HP better heads, better block, bigger cam, and redone intake with flat bottom,
LS2 05 I think, GTO's, iron blocks in trucks cam out earlier
LS series in trucks 4.8,5.3,6.0,

go to a book store and but the LS book, it a great read full of info, there are many people that know tons more than me, join LS1tech.com

The LS1 1st appeared in 1997 in the C5 Corvettes

The C5 Z06 received a 346ci LS6 engine. Early versions were rated at 385 and then went to 405 (not sure which year).
The C6 Z06 received a LS7 engine. This is a 505hp 427

Truck engines can swap many parts with LSx engines however I beleive they are called LQx. And as Steve68 said they have iron blocks.

385hp was 01 only Z06. 405hp were the 02-04 Z06s The cam changed slightly and the sodium filled valves were added.

get the 6.0L truck free cubes. cheaper and stronger than the ls1-ls6. 75 lbs heavier (iron block verses alum). can bore it more. put on f-body acessories. truck engines are lq-4, lq-9,etc. everthying will work between ls1, ls6, lq9 (cams, heads, acessories, intake) do a little more research if going ls2 it's basiclly an upgraded ls1-6 with some changes, but alot of ls1-6,lq9 stuff will still work. ls1tech.com is still your best place for research. do alot of searching and surfing before asking questions as most questions have already been asked and answered over there. if you can't find and answer ask away sometimes you'll be surprised how fast you get responces. joel

I agree for the most part. The down side to the LQ4/9 is that I believe the access. bracket will not clear a Ls6 or fast intake. You can run a 4 bbl style convert to injection. Shop around, do your research, and find a nice deal iron block or ls1 can't go wrong either way.

Which LSx engines have a 4.0" bore?
