Sure, its a "Pro-Touring" car, but with a simple wheel and tire swap, and the addition of a new 6-point rollbar, it sure does look different. I had to reposition the rear shocks upwards a bit, and slightly grind some casting corners off of my fancy front brake calipers, but everything fits now.
28x10x15 Hoosier slicks
15x10 (5.5 backspace) Weld Pro-Stars in the rear
15x3.5 Weld Pro-Stars in the front

These are definitely the biggest tires you can fit under those stock quarters. I even had to roll the fender lips to make them fit!

If the weather clears, and I get some time, I might hit the track tomorrow :3gears:

Lets see some ten second slips!

Tony,
Looks great. The suspension is still set up for handling? No changes (such as light front springs)

same suspension. I just loosen up the QA1 shocks alot up front, and those Cal-Trac bars on the rear work even with the car lowered.
If I can cut some 1.5 60' times, hopefully I can get a 10 second slip.

What size brakes are you running tony?

13s up front, I believe the rears are 12s. The front rotors stay about an inch behind those skinny wheels, thats how come they fit. I had to grind the outer corners of the brake calipers down smooth though. I took my time and did those slowly and kept the sanded areas smooth, and repainted the sanded area red again.

Its been raining about a week straight here. Today is probably the worst so far. I'm fairly certain the tracks will be rained out tonight.
This sucks! Maybe next weekend, unless a weather miracle happens.
my car is too slow for wheelie bars. What do you think this is, Pro-Street? :lmao:

Looks great Tony! The weather does suck, I have been trying to get to the track for 2 weeks!!

Those wheels are awesome! I have a 69 with standard wheel tubs and rolled fender lips. Do you have much room around the wheel well? How close are they to the shocks? I also have some cal tracs. I was thinking of getting some huge 15" tires until I can afford some 17" I pretty much want to track whore my car. The cage will be in soon.

with the proper offset wheels, I have about 3/8" between the sidewall and the stock inner wheel well. Now that I rolled the fender lips I have about 1/2" there between the sidewall and lip.
The tires clear the QA1 shocks by a large margin since the shock reservoir is located on the bottom side of the shock instead of the top.

I think the right magazine would kill to run a comparison tech piece on drag racing a pro-touring car. Inquiring minds wanna know:
-How did the wheels fit over big brakes?
Conversely, you can show how brake size may need to be limited if multiple wheels and tires are intended.
-Can the suspension be tuned quickly for improved E.T.?
Coil-over adjustment, sway bar disconnect, etc.
-How does the quarter mile performance compare?
Do a direct comparison: Same day, same track, different wheels/tires/tuning.
Please take lotsa pictures and submit the edit. You will help a lot of people.

Good idea Steve. I'll document everything and take some photos for my website too.
Any pro-touring cars out there with a wheels up launch photo yet? Maybe I can start that trend here. haha

I haven't run skinnies on the front of my car, but setting the front shocks full soft (rebound), disconnecting the front swaybar (I just remove the passenger's side end-link), and leaving the Cal-Tracs alone (basically set at no preload w/driver) has netted me several 1.5x 60' times on a 26x10" slick.
Good luck! Hope the weather cooperates. Around here it seems the only time I can get to the track is when it's hotter than the surface of the sun.
No wheels up launches but HPP got a couple of bitchin' burnout shots: http://www.firebirdofdoom.com/hpp_big.jpg
Edit: Oh yeah, the Cal-Tracs were definately the key to my combination. Consistent .100 drop in 60' time. I run my slicks at around 13.5psi w/tubes in case anyone cares.

Nice runs Jon! Your times/trap on that article reinforce my confidence that I can get that 10 slip with 122-123 minimum trap speeds. If I can cut a 1.5X I'm definitely in.

Tony what's the rearspacing on the 15" Weld's up front? Thanks

I'm pretty sure they only sell them in 15x3.5 with a 1.75 backspace. They only make one size 15x3.5, you just have to tell them your lug pattern.
