Hi all- I've been checking out this site and joined recently- lot's of great info here!
I'm looking for carrier suggestions for the 9" in my 68 Camaro. I want a "posi" or "limited slip" vs a locker or spool. The clutches have given up again- the rear is from a well known company, but I don't want to rip them. This Camaro is heavy (3900 w/driver), big motor and only a 3:25 gear- a combination that is not kind to drivetrain components!
Thanks!

I need to know what is in it now so I know what you are dealing with. If it is an Auburn then trash it. They are no good. If it is a US Gear Torque Line unit then it should be good. I don't know why it would wear out clutches unless you have mismatched tires on the back or you are doing a lot of water burnouts. If you drag race this car a lot, but still use it on the street then you need to get away from the clutch type posi and use a locker. If it is a drag only car then a spool would be good. If you are road racing or autocross racing it then go to a Truetrac or Torsen.

Ok, it's a Currie Trac Lock.
The car sees mainly street use and the throttle gets nailed regularly with considerable tire spin (and no I'm not some jack-ass kid doing burnouts up and down my neighborhood!). I don't hesitate to take it on a highway and maintain speed. The tires are good- nothing funky there. A few times a year I'll make it to the strip. I've heard the lockers are noisey and clunky around corners- I don't want to live with that.
I'll check out your suggestions. The TrueTrac looks interesting but they're pretty new- do they stand up to abuse?
Thanks!

The Truetrac is suppose to be very good for road racing and autocross. They are very smooth. I have heard that they might not lock up completely at the drag strip, but a tap of the brake pedal usually takes care of that. I don't have any experience with them in a high performance car myself. I have installed them in the front of 4X4 trucks.
There must be some reason for the premature clutch wear in the Trac Lock. When you go to the drag strip do you do water burnouts? That can quickly wear out the clutches in that type of differential. Has anyone noticed one wheel not spinning while doing the burnouts?

I have the truetrac and am happy with it. I have 5000 miles and one set of tires on it with no slippage or problems. I make 400 rear wheel HP and have not run slicks yet.

Locker here. I don't notice any harsh behavior. I've got one with a Moser 3rd member and 35 spline axles. I don't think I'll ever be able to break it.
Is it time for my Vic Edelbrock story again?
