i bought this charger from Harbor Freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?function=Search

can i put this on a new optima red-top battery for the winter?

it says for use on flooded or gel-cell batteries.

thanks,
Scott.

your link dont work, but if its the one that goes on sale for $4.99 pretty often (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=42292)...I've been using one for the last two years on a red top with no issues. In fact, I used those on ALL my cars and lawn tractors and snow throwers...etc.

yes, i just got it for 4.99 in the store, although the link shows 7.99 (pricing is a crapshoot there). it has a box style plug in, with a cord that goes into another small box, and a spiral cord that goes to 2 clamps. maybe i shoulda scooped another for my mower.

it's item 42292. try this link: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=42292

thanks for the response.

I have used a harbor freight float charger on a red top for about a year with success. If your battery is not at full charge float won't help that much, just seems to put a surface charge on the battery.
