Figured I'd start a "official" post to keep adding as the project slowly continues. It's been just over 2 years now but at least have a couple small things to show for.
Here's some pics of how it sets on this day... Just picked up the shell from being sandblasted. Unfortunatly that also shows what your actually working with, so now my pass. toe panel that I thought was solid, isn't so. Same with the metal behind the bottom part of where the front window would go. Must have rusted from the inside out because the outside was nice and smooth. Not sure how I'm going to go about repairing either of those spots without getting into a whole new mess of things. Guess I'll keep my eye out for a more solid shell. To top that off I also had my original cowl hood blasted only to find out the cowl portion is loaded with bondo. Got the doors and a few other misc panels blasted and coated as well. Am now waiting for my cowl panel and other misc. items to get finished at the powdercoaters.

Hey Buddy,
It has been awhile since I have seen your car..
To me it looks like you have made some significant progress :)
I know in the back of your mind you were concerned about
what the sandblasting would uncover..
Better now than later..
Stay the course brother!!

Here's another minor update, got parts back from powdercoaters today. I'll get some stainless hardware and get these mounted on the subframe. Now just waiting for a buddy of mine to finish painting my steering box and tie rods!

Speaking about things the blasting can uncover. When I had the shell of my '72 blasted, it uncovered a spot on the dash where the factory spot-welder melted the dash (all metal here) creating a hole som 1-1/2" in diameter!

Thanks! So far it's turning out ok. The rod sleeves are a set of extruded alum. jobbies I got from a guy off from ebay. Here's another auction of his for them, only these are for a 2nd gen. I'm sure he has more for the 1st gen...

Well, several months later, not much new but did pick up a few parts and as of a week ago I got the motivation to start cutting up some sheet metal again. Got the trunk floor and inner rear fender wells cut out, just about ready to replace. Just need to smooth and prep the frame rails to accept the new full trunk floor...
Also picked up a alum. radiator and electric fan to add to the front end along with a set of rear brakes to match the front.

BuddyP
12-02-2007, 05:19 PM
Scott, still considering some BMW wheels... sounds like they'll work out ok.
I hear that Tony, and the reason why I procrastinated so long on starting on the body...
...and here's a couple updates. Got the trunk floor fit and screwed into place along with both rear inner fender wells. Hoping to have them welded in next weekend. Have my rocker section close to being fit, but needs a little more messaging for it to be ready to be welded in.
If anybody see's anything out of wack here, let me know, I'd rather catch it now!

are you gonna mini tub?..if so wouldnt this be the time to do it? looking good to me..but im no body expert..
BuddyP
12-02-2007, 07:17 PM
Darrin, would absolutly love to mini tub... but when I figure in the extra cost of the mini tub kit, wider wheels and tires, that's half the cost of a good LS1 motor/tranny setup. Money I'd rather save to put somewhere else. I can deal with 1.25" less tire width in the rear. If I had more funds available I'd do it.... no body expert here by any means either lol, just learning as I go. I've never done body work before.

Thanks guys, still trying to plug along the best I can...
Finally picked up a motor... A 6.0 LQ4 long block. The truck it was in was in a fire, motor looked pretty grubby when I got it... but sure was resonable $$. Had the block blasted this past week and got some block paint on it. Have a L76 intake coming and my 90mm FAST cable TB got here just the other day. Also plan on L92 heads and Autokraft oil pan.
Also have a T56 tranny, freshly rebuilt, that I have setup to buy. So I will have that soon as well.

I'll take some pics... going to get the frame rail mounts prepped and ready for weld tonight if I have time. From looking through the instructions it'd be no problem for someone that can weld and has a welder... I have neither so I need to prep it and run the shell up town to a buddy of mine's shop. Everything looks pretty straight forward. The worst part of it will be having to shave down the axle housing leaf mounts for the new G-link mounts.

The line-x looks fantastic. I was thinking about doing the same with my project. I already spoke to my local line-x dealer, and they'll do it for a decent price. My only concern is the heat from the exhaust. Did you consider this? If so, any idea how the line-x will hold up? I assume the exhaust will never get hot enough to cause any harm. I'd just hate to redo everything because it melted.

Buddy, I just read through your thread and your car is looking real good! What are you planning to do for coil mounting? The reason I ask is we manufacture some trick billet coil mounts for LS2, 3, and 7 coils that allow you to neatly relocate the coils anywhere that is convenient such as firewall, lower frame rails, etc. If they look like something that you could use, maybe we could do some trading. I could use a couple good renderings of my project 67 Camaro to try out some stripe and wheel options. If you are interested, shoot me a PM.
Thanks,

Some minor updates. Was able to get some more items installed and assembled. Picked up a rebuiilt heater box with new heater core, got the tank installed and started installing the fuel lines. Need to finish routing the fuel lines in the rear to the tank.
Main goal now is getting to the point of getting the motor started. As of last night the subframe is bolted back up to the body. Need to button up a lot of wireing yet, get some gauges and sensors, plug wires and battery/battery cables.

Tight tollerance areas, the header is just touching the steering box. Not sure what to do here other than milling a couple degrees off the backside of the header flange. Also passenger upper control arm dosn't have much clearance. Has about 0 degrees camber, going to be an issue when putting a few degrees of camber in it.

Since it is always so easy to spend other peoples money I will suggest aftermarket UCA's and a more compact steering gear. I know it isn't probably anything you haven't heard, but I think both would remedy your ailments handily and offer additional benefits to the build.
While it is sooooo easy to have "scope creep" but I feel these would be worthwhile additions to your project if it can be funded.

Ironically enough I've been eyeing Ridetech's front end kit that includes UCA's, LCA', spindle and shocks... but will probably wait until the car is in the complete stage. I'll have to check into the steering box. Would rather catch it now than pull it apart later.

Picked up some angle rings to mount the small gauges and took a couple more degrees out of them. The '68 dash as such a slant to it I needed a good angle to be able to see them. They are still borderline but won't really know until I get a seat mounted in the car. The temp gauge I'm going to do a pillar mount so that it is right in front of my face.

Thanks! Yeah have at it. Can hook you up with the template for that plate in that area as well. I will note thought, now that I've done it, to maybe look at mounting the gauges at the very top (unless you have A/C vent there) for better visual access to the gauges.

Well thanks to Jason Mitchall I was able to get my dash and gauges all wired up last weekend. I can actually turn the motor over now but not ready to fire yet. Got a chance to set a seat in the car finally and yet another roadblock. Roll cage is too far forward and for me to be comfortable and not eating the dash, the seat sets about 6" behind the roll bar. Those gauges are very nice - I did something similar in mine but mounted them above the havc controls - even though i mounted them like you did i could hardly see them once i was in the seat and driving -- if you can before you put everything together try to get them at an angle similar to the tach where they are tilted back that should be enough to be able to see them fine - - i ended up ordering a gauge cluster from year one for the floor console because it was driving me nuts

Been a bit since posting an update but have done quit a bit.
BIG NEWS!!! FIRED THE MOTOR AND IT RUNS!!!
Got all the sensors intalled, intake setup and installed. Had to get a new steering box, the "used" one was junk. PS lines all plumbed. Just need to finalize cooling plumbing. Still need to install complete exhaust, just open headers right now. Also need to finish my PCV setup. One issue I have is the throttle body doesn't seem to have enough spring tension. It doesn't snap all the way back when pushing on the gas pedal. Using a Lokar throttle cable but seems to have a lot of friction in it. I have no sharp bends in the cable.

Buddy,
Love your build. A lot of the questions that you have I also have. Couple of questions:
1)I see you ran the engine side of the wiring from the american autowire kit. Is there a reason for this? I though that the PSI harness ran everything for the engine? No?
2)What intake setup are you running?
3)What radiator set up did you go with?
4)For the brake lines did you buy a standard camaro kit and modify it or bend your own for a full custom set up?
Also when you run the pvc stuff can you do a detailed install? I need to figure this out also. Also have any picture of how you ran the battery setup? Im curious as to how you ran everything, Im working on that now...Thanks for all the help. Im sure it feels awesome to finally hear her purr...

04-17-2012, 07:23 AM
Thanks Vince.... nice lookin PS hose eh?!
Yes some of the wires from the AAW are required. Ignition, oil and temp send for gauges, wiper motor and power to electric fan. That's pretty much it. PSI harness has everything for the motor. The second group of wires of the AAW (that has the green wires) are healights, turn and horn.
Intake are Spectre parts that I pieced together. Filter is just a K&N bought from Autozone.
Radiator I bought off ebay from a guy just north of Detroit. Can't remember the name.
Yes, bought brake line kit form Inline Tube and modified/bent to fit. I seemed to button up better than I had expected.
As soon as I receive my oil catch can from Mike Norris I'll deffinatly post up the PCV setup. Basically have put a PCV provision in the rear of the drivers and front of the pass side valve cover. One hose will go from front of intake to catch can, then from catch can to back drivers side. Other hose will go from TB to front of passenger valve cover. I'll post pics hopefully soon.

Congrats on the milestone!
I heard mine run last summer for the first time in 8 years so I know something of the thrill you must have felt, only yours was with an entirely new beast between the wheelwells!
I have the same Master cylinder and combo prop valve but mine will mount a bit differently. Which kit did you start with and modify to suit?
I was wondering how did you resolve the header to PS gear clearance issue?
Also, forgive me for not reading back but what Transmission are you running?
And lastly, I will just echo everyone else about the gauges and the car in general. Keep it up Buddy, looking great!

I started with Inline Tube kit for '68 camaro. It was the standard disc brake kit in stainless. Didn't have to modify very much. I came out pretty good.
As far as the header to PS clearance, when I swapped gearboxes I shaved the flange of the header at a bit of an angle. That seemed to do the trick.
Tranny is a T56 out of '06 GTO
Thanks for the kind words! It helps keep the frustrations down LOL!

Any more info on the brake line setup you used? I have the same brakes, and master. I dont have the same block under the master. Inline is telling me to run a 70-72 brass distribution block under the master, is that what you did? I really would like to keep it as clean as possible. Is yours from wilwood or inline tube? Im getting ready to order and would like a similar look to your setup. Thanks,

Steven, Not to comment for Buddy but I will. I just bought the same combination Prop valve/distribution block from Speedway. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Wilwood-Adjustable-Proportioning-Block,41747.html
Best price around by far on this item.
Tobin at Kore3 has a cool Stainless bracket I picked up that mounts it under the master horizontally, I have that but haven't mocked it all up yet except by eyeballing it without bolts,
trial fitting the parts and lining up the holes. It looks very compact and I am stoked to get it in there.

Been a couple months but still some decent progress. Got coolant in the motor to find out the next day that my new heater core was leaking.... yup, rip it back out. One of the tubes was not soldered in well. Got it built back up and re-installed. Hope it's good now since the fenders are on.
Had gotten the inner fenders and fender, header panel jambs painted for assembly. Also had the valve covers painted to match. Inner and outer fenders are now installed. Used all stainless fasteners. Motor is pretty much buttoned up. Received my oil catch can from Mike Norris and have the PCV lines ran.

Finally got coolant in the motor I hope for good. Was fighting a slight leak around my cooling fan switch that I had threaded into the coolant system. After being tapped, leaking, wrecking threads, getting new fan switch, welding on a bung and so for I am now proud to say I have a (as of now anyway) non leaking $100+ cooling fan switch! Only now to find another small puddle under the motor. As I was having a nervous breakdown thinking it was a head gasket I saw some coolant seeping around the hose coming off my steam port. Looks like it trickled down the front of the head and followed the head gasket around to the side of the motor then dripped on the floor. Soooo, so far so good. I have yet to have the car up to temperature. I'll cover my eyes for that........
Oh and I think.... think... I have all the leaks taken care of on the #&@*# stainless steel brake lines connections. I'd use standard brake line if I did it again!

Thanks Vince, yeah that was my first thought on wheels and also what a few other said as well. After seeing the paint on the car it's a bit darker than I thought I'd be which got me pondering on brushed centers.
Here's the potential wheel choice.... So black center or brushed?
And if it matters, car is minitubbed but with stock width rear end.

The above pics of the car in paint where taken from my phone and seem to have a blueish tint to the paint which it doesn't have. This pic below is a more try representation of the color....

Well I chickened out on the black hoops. I ended up actually doing brushed centers with smoke clear coat finish and polished hoops. I can always powder coat the hoops down the road. Should see the wheels on my porche in 2 weeks!

Franko, yeah the box was used and ended up being worn out. Replaced it with a reman Z box from Advanced auto. It was under $120. Just used my "old" box for a core. Same box, same ratio.

Car finally posted bail at paint jail and is now home again. The anticipation on the drive home from work knowing I was going to pick it up tonight was a rush in itself. Right now it is all platinum silver with satin black tail pan. Will be doing something in the way of stripes but that will be down the road, and after this thing is on the road. As soon as it was unloaded off the dolly and in the garage I didn't hesitate to start assembling a few trim items that had been awaiting in boxes in the garage. Installed the new door handles, marker lights and billet gas cap from Ridetech. The unfortunate thing is all the body shop dust over everything on the car (and I mean everything). Got the trunk area and interior wiped down. Still need to go through the motor, subframe, underbody, etc., that'll keep me tied up for a few more days.
Oh, and wheels get shipped tomorrow!

Here's with rear wheels installed, however, am pretty disappointed with the settings on the G-Link, with it setup on it's lowest and softest setting as you can see here it's still setting 3"-4" too high. Now I'll have to spend some more $$ on shorter spring with take up springs, etc., to get it to set right. So much for having all that adjustability. So with that said I just did a quick mount of the rear and pulled them back off. I plan on raising the front about an inch since the new springs will still want to settle.

Got the exhuast put up under it Friday night. Had a Pypes 3" X pipe already and bought a couple Pypes Race Pro mufflers to tag on the end of em. Just need downturns and hanger but was at least able to fire it up and hear it. They don't seem to be overly loud at idle, and that's what I wanted. But does have a lot of bass to it. Will be intersted to hear if they mellow out when cruising down the road. They say these get good and loud when you punch it.

Thanks Marty! Just too bad the camera does such a poor job at picking up sound.
Now I just need to figure out why my fans won't kick on. I have my fan switch located just before on the entry point of the radiator. It is properly grounded and works when I "jump" the switch with a ground. I ran the car at idle up to 230 degrees but fans never kicked on. The switch is a 210 185. Would there be that much temp difference from the engine head to the radiator?
The switch does work, I pulled it out tonight and held a torch to it and the fans did kick on.
EDIT/UPDATE: I did an experiment tonight, plugged the steam vent line and stuck a turkey temp gauge in that location and let the car heat back up. It was always around 20 degrees behind the motor temp. It read 180 when motor read 200.... and read 215 when motor read 235. I shut it down after that. Switch didn't kick on so either didn't have enough time to heat soak to kick on or is a faulty switch. None the less I decided tonight I'm just going to get a cooler switch to compensate accordingly.

Some more updated photos. Spent the weekend installing the door and quarter windows. They deffinatly took a little time but seemed to go in and was able to get them adjusted up fairly decently. Swapped out the rear shocks and get the back end down a little more, still sets a little high but want to see how much the shocks will settle. I have a little more adjustment down also. Now just need to finish hanging the exhaust, get it tuned, aligned and a license plate and will be able to drive er on the road! Interior will come later.

Good day today, took the car to the chassis dyno. It has only idled up to this point as it was too lean to get above idle much. So a tune and 5 pulls later the fresh 6.0 put out a comfortable 430 rwhp and 396 ft/lbs. HP peaked at 6100 with peak torque at 4600 and 300 ft\lb starting at 2800.
To top that it made it's maiden voyage this evening around the block.

300 mile update (first day on road 7-23-13).... so far so good. No leaks of any kind at this point. Motor seems to run strong and solid. Had some driveline vibration and after a few hours in the garage and a couple tries I got it smoothed out. Had some big angles with the lowered rear. Got the tranny shimmed up as far as I could and ended up doing the "Broke Back Configuration" for the driveline to keep the angles smaller. Am at 2.5 on each end of the shaft. Buzzed it down the highway tonight up to.... well, a "tad" over the speedlimit.... and seemed to be smooth. I think any small vibs at this point on the higher end are through the 'Cadillac' like suspension (Ha right), poly motor mounts, exhaust and everything else these things do to resonate through the car.
A couple things on the list now is to alter or swap out the damn door mirror that drops down every time I hit a decent bump or run at a higher speed and change out my PS pump pulley that's making a annoying belt squeal. After the cold weather starts to set in later this year I'll pull the exhaust to get a couple items altered and cleaned up. Then on to getting interior installed.
So at this point pretty happy. Haven't got it out as much as hoped but averaging a 100 miles a week so far. Starting to get more comfortable with it so will start venturing out a little further away from the homestead area.

I am going thru the same things as you are lol, driveline vibration was on my list too, and i finally got steering aligned much better than the shop i had attempt to do it the first 3 times and all i used was a tape measure unlike the shop with their fully computerized fancy rack... I like those azenzies you got , are they sticky? you've done quite a beautiful job with your 68 ... I still haven't taken my 68 out of town yet either but Im in las vegas and next town is in southern california so a little more shaking down before im ready for the road trip but hopefully soon! I didnt go the LS route you did but that is in the plan real soon as i already have the T56 trans and just looking for a good deal on motor. I have a little over 4 months in my build I couldn't imagine the timeline you had that would have driven me out of my mind lol ... But doing everything by myself didnt leave me at mercy of some shop owner and saved me thousands of dollars as well. still have interior to do but I may let a pro do that as I dont think i'll ever master a sewing machine and I've been trying ( guess I know where my limits are lol)
when i figure out how to post pics i will post my build (lol another one of my limits) but a long story short is WOW your ride is incredible hope you enjoy it for many years to come!!
