I believe that was a factory gear with most 4th gens. It was a common gear, I know that. I'll be running that with my 200-4R. It should be just fine with your mild motor.

I think the 85-88 era monte carlo SS had 3.73 w/ a 200r4 in stock form and after driving my uncles 87 I thought it was just a tad too steep (probably needed that gear for the weak *ss 305 engine to move the car:rolleyes: ) I dont know the overdrive ratios between the 700r4 and the 200r4 but I dont think you would be out of the ballpark with the 3.42's.

Footjoy, Your OD RPM will be 1878. This is on the very low end of the scale for an OD trans. So you should be fine. This number is calculated at 60 mph.Hope this helps Tim

I run 3.42s in my 70 nova with a 700. 2350 rpm at 70 mph. I think it's a pretty nice combo. I have 3.07s in my 69, gains me those 350 rpm at cruise but not quite as fun around town. Its all about what you want to do with it.

Again, how do you intend to use the vehicle?

a 300 hp 350 doesn't really need a higher stall. Maybe ~1800 but that is all that is necessary.

a 220-240 cam is a good all around stay on the smaller side and keep at least 112+ lsa for a tighter tc. i am running a 220/228 with a 2400 gm converter and it is fine. i could move up to a 3000 but dont really see the need right now.

If you want as little stall as possible, run as little stall as possible. Stock is like 1200 rpm i think? Like someone else said, 1800 is fine.

a 240 cam sounds too big for what this guy is trying to achieve. 300 hp? The 330hp crate motor has 212/222 @ .050 for comparisons sake.
