View Full Version : What are you using for a spare tire/rim

I have Baer brakes and 17 inch wheels on my 87 Regal Turbo T. I have never had a flat tire, and I always carry a can of fix a flat with me. Have any of you found a steel wheel to use as a spare that clears big brakes? I put a several thousand miles on my car every summer, and since I have moved to New Mexico I am concerned since there are miles of nothingness out here. I would rather have a good spare than a can of fix a flat. Thanks for any tips in regards to this matter. If nothing else, I may have Stockton Wheel make something up for me. I believe the bolt pattern on G-bodies in 4 and 3/4 (five lug).

What about a spare tire from a later model ta or ss those should be 5x4 3/4

You can use a spare from a '94-'96 C4 'vette as they came with 13" rotors from the factory. Anything prior to '94 had 12" and will not clear most aftermarket brake systems.

You probably already know this but be careful if using a different diameter spare on the rear. Running different diameter tires side-to-side will eat up posi clutches (or cones in the case of an Auburn).

One trick that some people are using is a 2004 GTO spare. Very light and small but very cool looking to.
If you need some help finding one, drop me a PM and I will look up the contact information. I might have a picture of one but I need to dig thru my external hard drive.
Rob I just remembered we are in the same town, let me know when and where and I can show you the spare I use.

Mick, I thought the newer model GTO had some strange bolt circle (something other than 5x4.75)? Is that not the case?

I will double check the size with my bolt pattern size gauge, but the spares I purchased fit over the Corvette hubs on my ATS spindles.

I did a little research and the '04-'06 GTOs use a 120mm bolt circle, not a 4.75". That doesn't sound like much, but if using a lug centric wheel, the studs will be off center and not allow the nuts to seat properly.

Thanks for the facts.
I did have them bolted up to my C5 hubs, but I have not tried them on the 12 bolt rear. This weekend I will try it out.

4.75 comes out to 120.65MM

Thats 0.0255905512 inches off. not enough to significantly matter, many people are running 5x120 mm wheels on their Chevys without issue. (search for BMW wheels on this site.) Should certainly be ok for a spare tire.

Thats a good price for a GTO spare. I paid $70 and felt good enoughto buy two. The Corvette guys talk about paying 125.
Grab this deal while you can, good job Tony.

Corvettes from 1984 - 1987 use a 16" spare. From 1988 - 1996 they use a 17". The 17" will work. Expect to pay $75+ for an 88 - 96 spare.

why not just buy a matching wheel and tire to what you have ?

MickMc

Is that against the rules?
Where can I find the rules?
Some day I need to start following the rules, maybe tomorrow.

oooops... i forgot... not all cars have a trunk the size of mine... I can fit a pair of 28" slicks in my trunk... oh the joys of a B-body mopar....

good reason though. didnt even think about that.

I would like to buy a spare Simmons wheel ($$$), but I know better than to even ask my wife. Thanks for everyones comments. I'll probably look for a Corvette spare.

Mick,

As soon as I get the exhaust back on my car I'll hook up with you. I just have not felt like laying on the cold garage floor and bolting my new cat-back on...not to mention the two bolts/nuts on my cat convertor that refuse to budge not allowing me to remove the cat and bolt on the test-pipe. I'll put some heat on the nuts later tonite if I feel like battling the chill in the garage.

Have a set on my 69 camaro with my Touring Classics C5 brakes.
Heres a pic, only have 3 lugs on but 5 would work.

What's the diameter of that tire? Any chance it would fit a 14" rotor setup, maybe with a small spacer added? I might have to buy one and just make it work (like everything else). Thanks,

One of those looks like it might fit behind my Elky's passenger seat.
The diameter is really close to my 275/40/17 & 335/35/17 numbers, too.
