In my shop I have a 2001 suburban 2500 that has 100k+ miles on it and we are doing an engine swap to it. The 6.0 that is in the truck is an aluminum block motor that has run poorly for a long time and oil comes out of the exhaust ports on cylinders 7 and 8. Since I'm a Pontiac guy I've never really investigated one of these engines very closely. Why would it leak like this? Why is the block aluminum instead of cast iron like most other lq4/9 truck blocks are? Could it be rebuilt at resonable cost if no broken parts/block exist? What the deal is? Maybe an LM4?

real bad piston oil control rings, valve stem guide and or seals. yes, worth the rebuild.

Thanks Quick, I figured it would make a good rebuild project. Can anybody shed light on the aluminum block?

As far as I know there was never a 6.0L aluminum block truck engine. On the back of the block there is a part number. Also what is the casting number on the head?

Correct, they didn't build an aluminum truck block until the 5.3L Trailblazer came out. All 6.0L truck blocks are cast iron.
