What makes it "damascus" steel? Is it the process? Is that the stuff that is folded over a kajillion times? Does it have to be folded a certain number of times to "really" be right? Is it functional or purely aesthetic?

The technically correct term for producing "Damascus" as we know it today is actually "Pattern Welding". Damascus is a general term for any process that produces a laminated pattern on a blade. It gets confusing because the blades actually made in Damascus were done in a crucible- not folded like the Japanese and Vikings did.

The way we make Damascus today is by taking two tool steels, one with a high nickel content for contrast and forge welding them together. I use 7 alternating layers of 01 and L6 barstock. Sprinkle with a bit of Borax as a flux, bring up to welding heat and wack it. If everything was clean and you have your temps right, you have a bar of laminated steel. It can be folded 6-7 times max before the pattern just dissapears. It is just like working with fimo dough. You can twist it, roll it up and grind it to create a pile of different patterns.

No matter what anyone tells you, Damascus can ONLY be as good as the steels it was made from. The process is really only for looks and to demonstrate a smith's mastery of forge welding. The more folds=better thing comes from back when we had to make steel out of iron ore and it needed to be folded and rewelded to work out all of the impurities. Even traditionally made Japanese swords manufactured from ore are only folded 12 times.

It does look cool though....
