I don't think that is quite the acurate picture Tony. The q-bomb car belongs to Friburger(sp?) and was at the Primemedia party but not at the regular SEMA show that I have seen. The orange 300 is on the floor in hot rod alley, and the other car is over in the wheel section with about 3000 other cars. Not many flat color cars here though that I have seen. Don't believe everything you read. Some killer cars here, they have just targeted a few for a story.

The flat paint on the CLS isn't anything new, those have been out for a while now. Personally I think it's kinda neat.

I like it, but don't want it to be considered the next trend. Hot Rod Black by Dupont has been around for awhile and is so nice when shot on a car or in an engine bay. There is nothing cleaner looking than a flat/semi-flat paint job!

When it hits the mainstream market, the trend is over.

Dude, say it's not so! I'm in the process of re-painting my car, using some flat. I've always envied the Mustangs and MoPars who used it, but never on Chevys.

Oh well, I'll do what I think is cool, trendy or not.

i always kinda thought flat paint was cool.... i dont think i would do it on my own car, but it does look great on some.

people in the volkswagen scene have been doing this for a few years now. all depends on he car and overall styling.

Some flat accents with normal gloss paint look cool, but the flat paint on all of those newer cars in the link do nothing for me. It's different, but that doesn't mean it looks good.

Pastels? Super-heavy metal flake? Spots!

How do You polish it? Wont it be super scratch and stain prone?

You forgot murals.

My money's on flake, though.

What do you protect the finish with? Anybody have flat wax and polish for it? Many people have always asked the question? What do I use to keep my flat black hood nice? Answer these questions and sell new products you might have a trend but when you frustrate people with new innovations that don't look nice for very long the trend goes down the tubes.

As usual I am a day late and a dollar short. I was thinking of a nice flat blue for my bird. Just as an understated look. I think it looks good on an old car depending on what look you are going for. On the new ones some look good some don't.

Yeah I'm so disgusted by what paint jobs cost and involve these days that my next project is gonna be primer black for a year or two. Since I actually trailer and go road racing the car gets a bit trashed anyway and I"m always making modifications and such...

The key to pulling it off is to still have perfect body gaps and good looking chrome and wheels.

It'd be a shame if it became a trend though.

I rememeber when I built my twin turbo setup I kept thinking wow a TT musclecar that'll blow people's minds ! Two years later and its almost a yawn from the "wow" point of view. Obviously a TT anything will always be cool from the performance standpoint though.

And a black primer paint job will never outdo shininess.

A lot of those "pro tour" cars at SEMA are overdone by my tastes though. Too pretty and showy. Now that the pros are taking it over the top Hot Rod will pronounce the trend dead next month :)

The majority of them are just street-rods in musclecar clothing. In a year or three the street rod scene will find a new flavor of the month. Right now it's musclecars.

The "rat rod" guys have been doing this for how many decades now? Funny how the bling crowd has just caught up.

I love how it looks on street rods and rat rods. A '34 Ford coupe looks awesome in a flat paint job. Not sure how I like it on muscle cars though.

I will concur that that Hot Rod Black by Dupont is awesome. I did my whole dash, firewall, wheel wells, core support, rails, and hinges in that stuff and it turned out beautiful.

it looked to me like they just didn't have time to finish the body work , and did that to make the car look somewhat presentable.

I 100% agree with you.. Running out of time, so the Flat Paint is the solution:lol:

The cars at SEMA that had a flat color on them looked like someone sprayed the basecoat and forgot the clear. I very much dislike that look. Nasty!

Actually you have to be a very good painter to apply a good flat paint job. With glossy paint you can wet sand and buff any imprefections. With flat paint you only get one shot.

I noticed this "flat-paint-fad" too. Some vehicles carried it well while others....mmmmm....not so much. Retro (rat) rods always look badass like that but I wasn't really a fan of the flat painted Kappa cars (Solstice/Sky). However, I like some graphics or hoods to be flat black like on Mopars. That just looks cool.

Another paint trick I noticed was the faux brushed aluminum finish on a few of the imports. There was also the blue anodized Solstice that looked like a glass Xmas ornament.
