Greeting group. My Blazer has a factory locking differential. What is the procedure for un-locking it. Any and all help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

The Blazer has the Eaton Governor Lock differential in it. This uses a governor to lock the differential if one wheel starts to spin considerably faster than the other at low speed. It will automaticly unlock when both tires have traction and you drive normally.

If it is locked all the time then someone must have installed a mini spool or something else in it. The Governor Lock unlocks itself when the tires return to equal speed. You need to remove the cover and see what is in it.

Well this isnt completely true as they do disentegrate and lock up. The best choice is find a reputable differential shop and have a new limited slip differential installed.
IF you actually take it out and put in an open rearend it can upset your ABS.
for the cash just install a new NON gove loc unit. TureTrac, Detroit Locker, Eaton, there are many different units out there that can be used and will work much better.
IF you want to retain the ability to lock it up but not use an LSD look into the Air Locker. Flip a switch and it works like a spool till you get out of slippery stuff, flip a switch and its off.
BUT this can some times mess with ABS. Found this out when I swapped a rearend out for a fella ,he brought in an open diff but same gears and then we had a nightmare trying to figure it out.
Since the "new" rearend was a rebuilt rearend we installed a Loc-Right set up and it took care of the ABS issues.
Good Luck
