Racepac info ?

Anyone here have any experience with any of the Racepac units? How well does the G2x gps antenna work? Does it or will it pickup if it is put in a rear spoiler on a 67 Camaro? I really like the G2x unit but am not too hip on having to put the antenna on the roof all of the time. Some of the other units are good for all of the needs except the speed and the street version doesn't have some of the options I would like in the other units.

So if anyone here has any info I am interested in what you know!

Check with Kyle at DSE. He has some kind of unit on the blue camaro for data recording. I am not sure of which brand it is, but he said he was happy with the info he got from it. It had a magnetic type antenna similar to a add on XM radio.

I have one that will be going into Penny.

Johnny just tested one and the story will be in the Feb issue of PHR. The roof is optimum but if you are in a good location other points should be fine. I am mounting my antenne on the back upper valance just above the trunk lid.

This way I can put it in the trunk when not in use (it's magnetic).

Thanks Steve, I thought about putting it there too. Do you think it would work in the spoiler hidden from sight? I keep telling myself that plastic shouldn't sheild it but then again I am not that up on gps signals and the strength and what it can penatrate, one would think that it would get thru but that is just a guess for me. If you could get someone to test it with a plasic cover over it would really be nice. Then we could both hide the thing where we wouldn't have to ever move it.

It would be better to have it open to the sky. Plastic "shouldn't" bother it but the spoiler is kinda thick.

You could always try it their then move it. The unit will tell you if you're getting sats and how many you are recieving.

I put the antenna in the bed of my El Camino near the cab. Not the best location but I still pick up more than enough satellites. It will even pick them up inside the garage.

Thanks Keith , thats enough info for me to not feel uncomfortable about doing what I plan on doing. I think the spoiler is as good a place as any and if I have any problems I'll notch it out like 50/50 and put it on the flat spot. The G2x has soo many good points about it and being able to attach all of the gauges and sensors to it that I want along with the ones you really don't need and also being able to plug in the Gen7unit to it makes it the ultimate setup. The only thing I don't get with it all is an odometer but an hour meter will do and with it being a multipurpose car and the title being able to say undetermined for mileage who cares. Hours will tell a much better story about the car anyway.
I can also add something later if needed and deal with it. I like the idea of more instead of less options. The only thing that I don't get with the G2x that I get with the street rod version of the dash display is the turn signals,parking brake light, high beams, and the odometer but all of those things other than the odometer can be done other ways that will still be just as nice.

Now I just have to figure out where to put he gauges so I can figure out cable lengths.

I have quite a bit of experience with Racepak's V300/V500 DAQ systems for drag race applications, but I haven't messed with the G2X.

GPS antennas for car applications tend to work best when placed on a large, flat or near flat ground plane (i.e. roof, trunk lid, even package tray if the rear window is large enough and gives the antenna plenty of "line of sight."

I have seen GPS / Sat radio antennas hidden inside plastic spoilers on imports that worked fine too, I would give it a try.

Just got a reply from Dave and it all sounds good to go for what I want to do.

Anyone else get any info at SEMA that they want to share about Racepac stuff.
