View Full Version : Anybody else addicted to speed?

I hit 155 mph today on an empty highway on my way in to work this morning. This is the fastest I have been on 4 wheels and doubtless the fastest my car has ever gone. I was trying to bury the 160mph speedo but ran out of road.
Why do I lways have to go faster? When everything is going to crap (like it has the last 2 days) I always get a huge pick-me-up from driving fast. It is my drug! Go fast, feel good, do it again! I can just see some head-shrinker analyzing me: doubtless he would say I don't like to deal with my problems, so I try to outrun them by driving fast. Or that I am bored and therefore need to satisfy my craving for danger by driving stupid fast. Either way, it works for me!
Anybody else addicted?

I used to be the same way, redlining a gsxr in fifth gear whenever I could. When I got in my mid thirties I calmed down a lot, I dont want to be that guy on the news who wipes out a family on their way to church. I still like to wheelie the bike or get it sideways here and there, but I leave the banzai runs for the young guys. I like to find an industrial area and slide the car around little too. I will still open the car up a little on the highway ,but not if there are any other cars around.
Also, once you get on the track the street stuff seems a little pointless.
So I guess my answer is that I still mess around in small dose but I should know better.

You're right, I should know better too. I am starting to realize also that I am not made of steel as I get older. My wife says I have an appointment with a tree on the side of a country road somewhere, but she says that's ok because she will be able to do a lot of shopping with the life insurance money! (Joking of course)
Can't wait to actually attend a track day, from what so many here say it is the best. I have been on the 1/8th mile before and it was exhilarating, but the open road course sounds like tons more fun to me now.

I still run her hard on top end, my modded c5 loves to run to 150+ easy, after that the car doesnt feel right. Once you rin a big track like Brainerd Race Way where you can get to 160+ in the straight and hit corner 1 at 120+ you will think speeding on the street is boring.
Hey Fotoboy, a friend of mine had a C5 and he said the same thing about it.
I get my biggest rush with massive acceleration as opposed to top-ending something. It's easier to do in short bursts!
HOWEVER, when I do feel the need, I also (like Vanzuuk1) break out my ZX-12R 0-150 in 9.3. :) I've had it maxed out twice and it's a rush that's hard to describe! (185ish mph)

How about a big rubber band with 190 shards of steel wipping around underneath you at 150??

We just run 660' on ice and I've hit 122 in that distance (5.5 sec.), but with proper gearing and a longer run 150-160 is normal for pro-stock sleds.... 257hp - 415 lbs... that's 1.61 lbs per hp

Doing 150 on a highway - early morning or not - is just stupid and dangerous to everyone else around you. I'm sure you didn't post this to get this sort of response, but personally I'm very glad that you're driving like that thousands of miles away from me and my family instead of locally.

I second that.

I hear you Buddy..
I have never been on a pro stock sled but I love the Adrenalin rush that you get on a fast sled on a well groomed trail..
Every time I ride I think to myself "I can't believe this is legal":firefire:

Also, I cant come down on bandit because I did the same crap, I have been with guys on this board and seen them do the same thing.
Anything over ninety is reckless in the eyes of the law and I bet everyone here has gone over ninety at some point in their lives.

Very addidcted. Whether it is 2 or 4 wheels on the ground or falling to the earth @ 120, I need a speed jolt every now and then!!

As long as he is on certain parts of the Autostrada those speeds are semi-legal depending on road conditions. The polica will nab you though if you are behaving like a jackass by driving too fast for the weather, lighting, or traffic conditions. There are solid limits in most metro areas, but out in the middle of nowhere it's a conditional thing.
When I was in Italy in May/June I spent more time above 170kph than below in a dinky Renault Megane and never got more than a smile and wave from Five-oh and saw numerous 5-series bimmers and S-series Mercedes flying by la polica at much higher speeds with nary a look.
People know what they are doing over there on the highways which makes that kind of driving much safer and more fun.

Just wait till you realise that 150 feels lame and going for 200 is what it takes to get you mildly excited, then you offically have a problem.
When you're in the pass seat watching the real time datalogging at 200+ they call it clinically insane... or so I've been told.

Few signs you're a speed junkie.
1. You've blown through an I-pass toll booth @ 180+
2. You know exactly where the police turnaround points are on the highway and how much time you have to be reckless before they can see whats going on.
3. After stoping to pay a toll, you just happen to know it's exactly 1 mile to the next overpass... and timing a standing mile run seems like the only logical thing to do upon this revelation.
4. The guy on the gsxr 1k swears he wants to run for $$$, to which you respond "just go, you have no idea whats about to happen to you"... and by 3rd gear it looks like he's on the brakes, 4th gear and he's out of sight... when he finally catches up his only response is (#)$&@*!&^!@^@$&()@%()#&$@*)#*
As retarded as it sounds having an insanely fast car actually makes late night high speed runs a good bit safer. I mean if you can run 100-150 in sub 4 seconds, 80-210 in 10, ya don't need a whole lot of room to get it on.
Oh and it's not offically a fast car till it will incinerate a set of 345/30/18 bfg drag radials from a 4th gear roll.

Let me follow this up by saying that driving like this in Europe is one thing, doing it in the United States is absolutely RETARDED.

206mph (http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c141/ohhhnoes/log.jpg) 206mph is cool. Going anywhere near that fast on public roads is criminally insane. People who do that have no regard for their lives or the lives of others and should be treated the same way as someone who threatens other people with any other deadly weapon.

All that means is you get into trouble sooner. If it doesn't take as long to get up to speed, you'll be at speed for a longer time. If you though the area was okay to run with the slower car, you'll probably feel the same way with the fast car. Plus you can make high speed blasts in areas you wouldn't be able to withthe slower car, meaning there's more places you can get into trouble at.
Although, a car designed to run at high speeds is usually designed to be stable at that speed, which is an advantage over high speed blasts in something that wasn't intended to go faster than 70. Not to mention it probably (hopefully) has better brakes and speed rated tires.
Oh and it's not offically a fast car till it will incinerate a set of 345/30/18 bfg drag radials from a 4th gear roll. That's an aspect of power, not speed. If it's spinning the tires that bad, you can probably gear it lower and get more speed out of it.

haha thats funny. It's got 3.08 rear end gears and 4th is 1:1, so that roll from say 4500 to the 6200 redline would cover 120-165mph. In 5th it will run 230 and 6th would theoretically pull to 300. It's not so much gearing, but the 1380rwhp that makes it blow the tires off. But believe me we're getting it to hook better and that sob flat hauls. 100-150 in high 3 sec range. :smoke:
Yes 200 on public highways is a little stupid, but @ 3am when you see 1 car every few miles it's not such a big ordeal. Say what you will, but it's not nearly as uncommon and irrational as you make it out to be. Fact is people who really are speed junkies would be hooked after one ride. It's either that or they vow to never step foot in a car that quick/fast ever again.

I can't speak for myself, but one car is all it takes. I'd say to ask how I know, but I'd rather not talk about it. Stupid is as stupid does. I admit I have a thing for speed, but I also admit I'm an idiot.
