I have a XR280 solid roller cam in my big block chevy. Recently the old engine block devloped a crack so we transfered everything into a new block. something that I didn't notice before was the roller lifters are skewed. I know that the are at different angles relative to each other due to the splayed valve heads. The issue is the centerline of the lifter roller is not parallel with the centerline of the cam shaft. It looks like there is about a 5 degree difference. This will cause scuffing on the cam profile.
Are there any other guys out there that have built BBC roller cam engines that may have noticed the same? We put in a set of PBM solid roller lifters and they are parallel with the cam.
The lifters I have are about 3 years old yet only about an hour of running time on them. (Been taking way too long to get the rest of the car done). They are the older style 866 lifters. I just purchased a new set of 819's to replace the old ones. The old ones had some scaring on the outside of the lifters from coolant in the oil. We'll see if the new ones are correct. If not I may go with the PBM lifters. The new style COMP CAMS solid roller lifters now have an internal oiling hole that supplies the needle bearings in the roller with pressurised oil. I'd like to keep that feature.
The COMP CAMS tech line wasn't any help and even though the lifters don't have much run time on them they won't take them back due to the age.
