As a diag tech get your self a decent scanner that will read out proper info. You can usually pick up an older Snap On "Red Brick" on /ebay and then with proper software actually see that the car is working and understands it.
Those code readers usually just make it hard for techs like me to get the customer past the"Well XXXXXXXXX store told me it was this because I have such and such code" then I have to tell them that a code may only get me close to problem and not tell me wht to fix.
Codes just get you to somewhere close to the problems and they sure as heck wont fix problems.

Well Actron makes a code reader that displays the code and its meaning on the screen. I work at Advance Auto and we got those.

I bought an OTC Genisys on Ebay... it's come in quite handy!

I'm a Snap On dealer and I'd agree with this 100%. There is a huge difference between a code puller and something that will display the data stream your ECM is making decisions with. The customers I have who use the generic OBD-II code readers are the same ones who the parts stores have a big star next to because they can't diagnose anything but they sure can change every part in the car out till they figure it out - maybe.
The PN for those looking for Ebay finds is MT2500 or MTG2500 on the scanner body.

I bought the autotap for $199 and love it. You need a laptop but cheap ones are everywhere. I was able to better diagnose while driving. It will capture data at the time a code pops which is really helpful. Autozone was no help.

They also have the cp-9150 that does obd1 and 2. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B00020BM32/ref=cm_rev_next/104-2370349-0960756?ie=UTF8&customer-reviews.sort%5Fby=-SubmissionDate&n=15684181&s=automotive&customer-reviews.start=11 I am also in the market for something like this and am researching this. I have an LT1 scanmaster for my car and it is good, gives me all of the required info (from PCM), but I am not able to erase codes.
