View Full Version : my '72 Mustang project, 4.6 turbo'd

here's my project, it's a 1972 Mustang Grandé, it has a 351C Boss engine with 4-speed toploader, but in the future that engine is going out again to make room for a 4.6 twin turbo engine...
suspension up front, boxed lower arms, all new p.u. bushings, still on the to do list is or a set of tubular upperarms or i'm gonna box them myself like i did with the lower ones

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2006/10/DSC01677-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2006/09/DSC01679-1.jpg
swaybar is a 1" type with p.u endlinks bushings.
rear is more interesting, the rearaxle will be 4-linked in a triangulated setup. so no more leafsprings.. shocks/springs is a set from comp. eng.
4-links

my wheels..
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2006/09/DSC01687-1.jpg
255-45-17 front/285-40-17 rear
just put the new fuel line in, and little while ago i've measured everything for the four-links setup, made drawings of all the brackets i will need, and gave them to a friend of mine who will lasercut them for me...
frame is already tied together
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2006/10/DSC01099-1.jpg
new dashlayout..
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2006/10/DSC01243-1.jpg
autometer gauges, except those in the airvent, those i bought at a show in Germany, they will light-up once ignition will be on.. otherwise they will be dark...
more to come soon...

Damn nice work!! What 4.6 are you going with??

did you run the rear suspension through any sort of geometry package? getting a useable 4 link setup in the early mustangs is near impossible, i have ran the numbers, and basically gave up the idea. Very interested to see what you come up with.

"just" a 4.6 SOHC... but i've seen those living happily with 600hp...in a streetcar...:drive:

i didn't ran any numbers or used some sort of calculator, just read a lot, looked at stock suspensions a lot ,from different manufacturers, and they all seem to "do" a different approach of the rearsuspension build-up, angles, length of bars and such,.. so im sticking to the room i've got underneath, but i think i will have to cut the floor up for some clearance, just minor.. and just go with the best set-up possible, the rods are adjustable, so there's some room there.

Just curious; with your links, why didn't you put a threaded end on both ends (assuming you built them yourself)? Constructed like that, you'll have to unbolt one end to make any adjustments rather than simply popping the jam nuts loose and turning the tube..
Also, where did you get those ends, and what size are they? I was looking for something similar for a project I was working on, but couldn't find anything other than monsterous pieces for off-road toys (ie, 3/4").

What type of rear suspension are you putting in your project? The Air-Ride rear setup uses a triangulated 4-link that apparently works really well. It would be relatively easy to duplicate this setup but with some coil-over shocks in place of the air bags. Another mod I would make to this design is to move the lower bars from the original front leaf spring mount to the inside of the frame rail for greater tire clearance.

i bought these bars at a shop in England, (www.wisbech-engineering.co.uk), they offer them "double-adjustable", but this will be my streetcar, so i will have to adjust them only once, so therefor
i chose single-adjustable
size of the threads are 3/4, ..
@kmcanally, that's where i got the idea from, from the airbar from "airride", i'm just gonna copy it onto my car..
shocks/springs will be a set of coil-over from compition engineering..,
so maybe in the future ,airbags are easily installed..
@Turbo Rob,..
it may take a while, but it will finished 1 day..

well, it has been a while, sorry for that. almost a year
a lot has been done, the car has seen the road , the 351C runs great (more on that later on..), and of course lots of modifications have been done.. here it is the first time on the road
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/DSC01966-1.jpg
the first thing that came to mind was that the rear springs were way to harsh, i had 200lbs springs in there, swapped them out for 150lbs, the car sit a little lower now, shocks were swapped for QA1 pieces
also 1 thing got my attention was the fuelconsumption,...
at almost 10miles to the gallon, thats not funny anymore, a friend of mine said it was smoking a "little", well sitting in the car when idling wasn't funny to, i couldn't see the trafficlights because my eyes were burning..
i tried to get the mixture right.., but to cut a long story short.. here's my $500 Barry Crap carb.. it was a brandnew piece, it ran 130 miles
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/DSC01971-1.jpg
here's what i did with it..
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/DSC01976-1.jpg
nice customer service as well over there at Barry Grant (500 bucks down the drain that is!!).. i never seen a better example of bad workmanship. holes drilled different sizes, shavings inside the carb, casting flaws everywere, its a genuine piece of.... well you know what i mean..
so i now have a QFT-carb , now that's a piece of work..
it instandly gave me around 20mpg from the start, which is decent i think..
modularboy
01-26-2008, 12:49 AM
so that was my BG-adventure,.. , time to move on.
time to take on the front suspension..
the lower arms are already modified. now i did the uppers
i did the rollerspringperch conversion
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010342-1.jpg
here's both of them

i painted everything, put new 1"lowering coils in it (550lbs)
and put it back together.
new brakes! im going for a Mustang Cobra 2004 conversion. front and rear..
the old drums
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010398-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010407-1.jpg
and the front, this is original a disk car, so there are no conversionbrackets available as far as i know, . i started with '65 hubs, these put the wheels 1/4" more to the inside, but with the disc on, and i have to use a small spacer for the calipers, it will be back to the original track width
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010424-1.jpg
old 11" disk and new 13"
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010425-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010427-1.jpg
made some templates
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010434-1.jpg
then made the mout of wood for test fitting, and works out great, now i have to put every size on paper and have them lasercutted.. like i did with the rears.
more on the engine!
this engine is staying!! i like it a lot.. lots of power, and theres to much time put in to it, taking it back out is a waist i think..
so i upgraded a little, it now has a new crane cam , the F-238, and because of that, hydraboost!
with the previous cam i had trouble with braking (lack of vacuum..) so this thing would only made things worse.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010387-1.jpg
also some new valvecovers. had to made a modification, otherwise it wouldn't fit
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010385-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/P1010386-1.jpg
soon some more.

next thing was try to fit the shocktowerbrace's. well, they don't anymore , because of the angle of the hydraboost , that has come up a bit to clear the most of the valvecovers, the mastercilinder is now in the way, so more drawing, cutting has been done.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/02/P1010474-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/02/P1010455-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/02/P1010456-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/02/P1010457-1.jpg
the missing piece will be a piece of round tubing, so it will be a 1 piece design
next week i'm bringing al the stuff that has to be lasercut to my buddy , so he can cut it and then i can paint everything and start mounting the frontbrakes and the new shocktowerbraces.
and some picture's of the car.. the frontend needs to be down a little, but time will do that i guess, (i hope!! otherwise, the coils will be cut.)

Wow nice work on all you have done so far I was looking at your roller perches and a-arms it's funny just last week I got those parts out for my car to look at doing the same things you did.
What bearings did you get for yours and what tubing size is that? I was also thinking about converting the a-arms over to roller bearings as well and adding plates as you did. Are there any hints you have before start on mine? The 70 71 Torino uses some of the same parts up front so this is grate info for me I will also be doing a shock tower brace as well I had to weld up a few cracks on mine so I want to prevent that in the future.

sorry for the late respons, kinda forgot about this again,.. been a little busy...:bsjerk: :D
@Nick
the grill is a custom made by me.. still not finished , it needs some more work around the headlights.
the headlights are for a Golf , early one type I/II, they are the same diameter.., they are the clear ones.. gives much more light then the original ones..

i got the master roller perch kit..
top quality stuff with everything you need supplied, he also offers them assembled i believe..
and i will look at your car!

and the front will be lowered a bit more, it has been a year now with the new springs, and i think i doesnt settle any more than it has now, so i will start with a half coil, and see what that gives me..
and i hope some paint in the spring!

yes i have, the rod that goes on the brake pedal had to be shortened. and the plate on which the unit is mounted, uses a different bolt-pattern than the mustang-pattern, i took the plate off and removed the studs
redrilled the plate to match the mustang pattern, welded the old holes shut and bolted it on, with some shims on the bottom bolts, to raise the unit up so it would clear the valve covers..
it really works well with the 1-1/16 master cilinder from a 96 Mustang i put on there and with the Cobra brakes...

I'm sorry for kicking an ancient thread up. But is there any news on this mustang? I'm very interested, as I have the same stang, and I'm planning things like you did. I'd really love to see what's become of this!
