Sounds good. I think when you want more power you might try a victor jr intake and a 750 carb. Also a set of 3 step headers will work great, mine are 1 5/8, 1 3/4, then 1 7/8" into a 3" collector. I drag race but have found smaller than a 750 carb just doesn't get with it even on a 289 as my old 3310/780cfm Holley would spin the tires but a tweeked 600 wouldn't! I have a small bench-top SuperFlow Bench bought in the early 1980's. For more info on my combo check out the newby 'Ford Owner'.
When I quit racing (i'm 66 yrs old now) I plan on converting it back to street duty, with 71 Cougar front disc brakes (direct fit even the tie rod ends as right now they are on my used to be driver a '64 Falcon Ranchero), take the ladder bars off the rear, install one torque ladder bar similar to the camaro's and definitely road race style.

I am runngin 275/45 on the back and 245/45 up front. I just slipped them on for the first time last night with the tires and the backs hit the leaf springs. SO i put a 1 in. spacer on and now they stick out a bit to far. Do you have any suggestions as to what to do? I guess if I have to I will put wheel flares on it but I didnt want to do that.

kmcanally
10-29-2006, 01:21 PM
I would try running the minimum spacer width necessary to clear the leaf springs. If at that point it still sticks out too far then you will have to go smaller or start cutting. Typically 65/66 cars can run 245 or 255 max with only some rolled lips and some well placed BFH hits to the inner housing. I would stick a 245 on the back, tuck it in as far as possible and slam it. If you cut you might as well go with a 295 or maybe a 315.

So I assume you are in Texas as well? If so then welcome from a fellow Texan. Actually I did not see it on their site but in a newsletter that they periodically send out...I will look at it tonight when I get home to confirm but I am pretty sure that they are building a customer car called Pegasus as well. And like your it is also a 65/66 coupe.

looks like a nice project but i have one really big piece of advice for you. DITCH the Flaming River rack!!!!!!!!!!ASAP. you will have nothing but problems with it especially if you want the car to handle well, the stock leaky as hell Bendix power system is loads better then the FR rack. there are huge bumpsteer problems with these as well as numerous fitment problems. if you want a manual rack check out the new unit from unisteer, right now they are available from Summit for less than $550 or go with the TCP manual rack.

I have the Randalls Rack and I HIGHLY recommend that. The guys @ Dallas Mustang building the Terlingua Mustangs were having probs with the FR rack and they were asking me about mine a few years ago because they were wanting a change. DONT GO FR!!!

Hi Spicer,

I'm new here too....been doing the '65 which was in silver...just like your.

Your posting got me...buddy. Inspirations are pretty high here. Your detailing on the engine...the goodies under...awesome. Things that I could learn to do it right....are right here.

Keep posting the details...I've learnt a lot...so the rest of the wild horse fans, I'm sure.

Small question ; where did you get the rear light frames ? Please take me there !

Best,

George

Mustangs Plus sells them. I can't get thier site to work else I'd get you a direct link.

National Parts Depot sells them too. The part number is 13489-2c1 if you want them plain and 13489-2c2 if you want the black detail milled in the middle of the grill.

Hi Spicer,

Any news ? Eager to learn from your project !

By the way , I like your setup of the engine room brackets, they are neat & unique. How do you go about it ? Are those available off-the-shelf ( by whom, at what cost ) ...or custom made by yourself...if this is the case do you have drawings ...that perhaps you wanna share?

Thanks & Cheers,

Well it's been a while since I have had an update about the progress of the 65. Things are moving a little slower now but we are currently in the process of finishing her up. At the moment the only thing left is the wiring, stereo system, install the interior, install the glass and the door poppers and get a drive shaft made. I'm sure I will come across other things aswell but those are the only major things left to do. Here are some up to date pics of what the car looks like. I am looking to have it all said and done with sometime in July. Let's keep are fingers crossed! By the way I still havent figured out what I am going to put on the plates yet. ANy ideas would be appretiated. They just can't be more then 6 letters/numbers, right now I am leaning towords "No Dice" and "SLIC 65"

Hi Spicer,

It's been a long time alright !

Congratulations on your Grigo Mustang. It's so beautiful. I bet you smile cheek to cheek drivin' it !

Your Mustang was one of my inspirations ; remember my queries on rear light bezels and all those fancy engine room brackets ?

My 1965 Mustang project is now completed as well. In fact, it was since mid December of last year. Yes, our projects took some good part of our life. But I thinks they're worth every minute !

Come & have a look - see at my " The FANGs " 1965 Mustang !

Cheers,

GM.
