Someone told me they think there is an electric motor conversion for 1968 / 1969 vacuum RS headlamps. We are converting a non RS to an RS and I would be interested in using electric motors instead of the horrible repo crap, but am ashamed to say I do not know about this electric conversion if there is one.
Can anyone help?

I don't know for sure, but I heard somewhere that DSE may have something coming for that down the road. I'm not sure when though. I'm sure someone else knows more.

There is a guy on ebay every once in awhile will sell his instructions for his electric conversion on a 69 he did. I find it usually when I search for camaro rs. Don't know how good it is but it might be worth a try.

There are a couple of guys in my local Camaro Club that use Corvette Actuators on their Camaro's, suppossedly it is a more robust design than was used on the '67 Camaro.

James, tell us more about the setup you mentioned. Is it from the C4 vettes? Can you get any pictures of the setup those guys did? You may have opened a can of worms with that post :lmao:

I'm not sure exactly, since I'm not an RS owner myself, I'll do some checking at our meeting next Saturday, but I want to say that it's a setup from a 60' Vette.

On May 11, 2004, a user by the name of Stacy posted his solution with a modest charge for the writeup. A search using 'electric rs headlight' under the camaro tech 2004 section in www.camaros.net will yield it.

I just ordered the plans from the fellow that is marketing the 69 rs conversion on Ebay. Once I get them, I`ll look them over and see if what he has will actually work. If I feel that they really will, then I will post what he has come up with on this site and team camaro. I`d still like to know how James` car club members did theirs as well though.

Years ago I took the doors and motors from a 67 rs parts car and put them in my 68 which wasn't originally an rs. That seemed easier than finding all the vacuum stuff for the 68 or trying to convert them. Unfortunately I sold the car before it was completely finished so I can't tell you how well they held up. I'm assuming GM changed them to vacuum in 68 because they had trouble with the electric motors at that time. Of course finding original 67 motors that work is probably more difficult these days (and costly) than making a conversion.

Well, I talked to the guys in my club, and the modification they used was to use headlight motors out of a Corvette. Apparently they used a kit that makes the conversion, but it should bolt into a '68, and I would think a '69 as well (I'm guessing the '69 uses the same actuator as the '68). Apparently the 'vette motor is a geared motor instead of the direct drive that the Camaro unit uses. Hope this helps.

What year vette did they get the motors from James? Thanks for checking out how they did it. I did receive the information that the guy on Ebay is selling on how to use electric motors for a 69. If there is any interest out there, then I will gladly send them the info.

He said it was for the same year 'vette, so that would be '67.

I don't know if anyone is still looking into or have found the conversion kits for the headlights on the 69 RS Camaro, but this company has them now.http://www.retro-electro.net/home.html . Looks like a good system. Any other systems to compare with or that looks like they would be better? Thanks. Trond

The control boxes at retro-electro didn't work. The owner/designer: Mark, is working on a new design. Don't know when they will be available to try.
