View Full Version : Mustang or Fairlane?? Next PHR project car.

Thoughts?
Was looking at doing a 67-68 Mustang coupe (since fastbacks are crazy priced), but then go to thinking. Maybe should try something a bit different.
I really like 66-67 Fairlanes.. nice lines and can look killer when done. They also don't cost an arm and a leg.
The problem is aftermarket stuff for them, not a lot out there.. yet.
351 engine and maybe a shockwave system or something for handling. Give it a NASCAR look with steelie wheels and some vintage graphics.
What do you think? Mustang or Fairlane and would there be interest in doing a non main-stream car like the Fairlane?

I voted Fairlane, but can't help but think that a Grand Torino or even a Galaxie would make a cool project. I like those as well. Take it from someone who owned a '66 road stain, they are over done by all the Ford mags, try something off-beat.

or 1970 Ford Fairlane because I saw one one the freeway and it looked like the Mad Maxx car (I know its not, but it looked close, but bigger)

I say Fairlaine. RRS makes the coil over conversion and i think a rear system too. Add the R Code lift off hood.

Do a Fairlane. The NASCAR treatment would be sick. If you find a place wiht some vintage graphics let me know. I'd like to add some flavor to my Nova.

Fairlane or a Falcon. Fairlane would be cool but could be a little heavy. I think the Falcon could use most of the mustang parts thus making it a little cheaper.

Fairlane for sure.

NASCAR Fairlane. That so cool!
I voted Fairlane too but instead of the NASCAR theme, how about Trans Am style since this community emphasizes all around handling particularly road course style racing instead of just turning left with your foot on the wood? I know there weren't Trans Am Fairlanes but it would be a way cooler styling exercise than a NASCAR treatment.

I love the Mustangs, but you can go really fast in a lot of the other Ford/Mercs as well...something that I think gets overlooked a lot. A really cool non-Mustang project might just get some people thinking.

That's an easy choice... Fairlane over Mustang. I've always dug those cars and actually have a very very rusty '67 Ranchero with a 289. Besides, anything you can/would do to a Mustang, you can do to a Fairlane just as well. There are enough aftermarket parts to make it an attractive proposition, but not so many that you can just buy-and-bolt the car the together (which I'm really really really tired of anyway). A bit of NASCAR thrown in using used race parts sounds brilliant!
And since we're talking about alternatives, don't forget about Mercury Comets, Cyclones, etc. And for all the blathering on that magazines have been doing about Mavericks and Comets, how come no one has done one yet? Or do a bigger Ford or Mercury like a '71-'73 Mustang or Torino, or a Marauder or Montego. Or maybe just a super cheap '69-'70 Mustang coupe before they get too popular. Or do something really off-beat like a vintage '80s XR4Ti with a 5.0/T56 swap and Cosworth bodywork!
Here are some of the ones I've been dreaming about:

Fairlane if that is the only choice other than Mustang, however, how about:
70 Torino
63 1/2 Galaxie
Mustangs are like camaros, anyone can do one of them. Show us something we haven't seen.

You guys have had a lot of really interesting Mustang feature cars over the last year, and it's been great. I think a Mustang build might be a bit superfluous at this point. Especially in light of the fact that Car Craft is doing one right now as well. Though on the other hand, if you did one too with the intent of a SCCA Solo & Open track showdown between the two finished cars it might make for an opportunity for some interesting and beneficial cross-promotion between the two mags.
That said, I would like to see something like a '57 Ford Wagon on a Schwartz chassis. Chuck a mod-motor with an AOD in it and maybe 18's. Just a nice cruiser.
The NASCAR-esque Fairlane would be fun too. A little something like the Holman-Moody cars.

How about something for us Pontiac Guys?? I know there is project g/28 but how about a 70-73 Firebird? Poncho Power all the way. That would be different.

Would be cool to have a ford, gm and mopar set of cars going at the same time. Then have a shoot-out with them..

I would have to vote for a Maverick, I'm partial. Most components swap with the Mustang and they're dirt cheap. Come to think of it, don't build a Maverick prices will increase. My second choice would be a Fairlane.

Ford made the Mustang as a way to sell all of the UNSOLD Falcon/Fairlane parts. Since the Mustang was/is a little more popular and MUCH BETTER LOOKING, this decision is a no brainer.
67-68 Mustang Coupe!

Hey Bill,
That Torino is really cool.
I see your car is in the '07 Flowmaster Calendar. Great picture of it. I always admired your GTO. Awesome car. I'm partial to Pontiacs. I have a '68 GTO and me and my brother are building a PT '69 GTO right now.

Thanks Bret. That picture was just being in the right place at the right time. It was taken on the power tour in Perry, Ga. Actually Flowmaster was doing a shoot on the Cuda, and Bob asked me to bring the goat along to put all his junk in the trunk. Then Dave with Flowmaster asked me what type mufflers I ran. Of course, I have always had flowmasters, so he said, "How about a shot or two of your car." Well, the rest is history, I am truely honored to be not only in the calender, but also in their print advertisements.
Be sure and show us some pictures of your GTOs, we need more Abodies around here to offset the over abundance of first gen f-bodies...

I have always used Flowmasters also. Love that sound. We're probably going to put Super 40s on the '69. Here's a pic of my '68. It's a street/strip car and runs 11.30's in the 1/4.

do a Mercury..The Meteors (before they were big cars) around 63 were cool...the comets around there were cool too..I bought a 64 or 65 Comet 440 2 Dr. Post from George Poteet..had 8,500 miles on it..like new..it was one sharp body style..not those with the Japanese looking tail lights)these were a little bit smaller than the 66-67 Fairlanes..They are reasonably priced...there was a white 63 Meteor in Decatur Ala. that was very nice. $7500 ASKING..

taken from another site..but i have heard they weigh less than factory stated from many 66-7 owners...
66 fairlane, 289, C4.
With me in it, half a tank a gas, and my 25lb mountain bike in the trunk it wieghed 3220.
minus 165 lbs for me, 25 for the bike and 70-80 bs for ten gallons of fuel and you get close to 2960, thats not bad huh?

what you forgot to tell them was his car was parked next to the Cuda...several rednecks walked by and they threw a few empty cans and trash over in the Goat. I said hey, what are you throwing in the Goat..They said sorry, sitting next to the Cuda, we thought it was a dumpster...lol...

Laugh and joke if you must, but remember the Goat beat the Cuda to the magazines.:moon:
It also had enough room in the trunk for your junk, my junk and Bob G.s junk, and still posed for a picture that was good enough to make the flowmaster calendar.
Oh, did I mention that I don't have to wear Bose noise cancelling headphones to drive down the Interstate?

my vote is for the fairlane. the pony cars while great and nice are everywhere, it really takes alot to stand out and garner attention. you start to get glassy eyed and miss alot of great fbodies and mustangs, because they are everywhere. your magazine cred and contacts you should be able to build a wicked nascar themed fairlane. rape the circle track catalogs and build a sick performer for lo dough, that stuff is all functionally cool and inexpensive in relation to the stuff geared to the show crowd. There is a sick white nova here with black steelies and spoilers that makes you want to see more because it is different. Yet it is a white car, not the most eye grabbing but it is different so i find myself drooling and fiending for more pics. a fairlane would do that samething. Just my .o2

Red low buck, minilite style wheels with spoilers had that vintage trans am feeling. it was just so different it jumped out at you, i got excited when i saw the intro to the fairlane. i cant wait to follow that car. good luck
