The new Hot Rod is out and they picked the Holden "Efigy" as the top car build of the year.

Interesting that they picked a OEM produced concept car as the #1 hot rod of 2006.

So what are the other 9?

The Efigy is an awesome concept car, but I can't see picking an OEM concept over all the fantastic builds that are coming out of shops and garages these days. Kind of goes against the purpose of Hot Rodding, doesn't it?

I agree, but if GM would build it, I'd buy one.

A crew of hot rodders built it, just like a crew of hot rodders that might work for an independent shop, building the latest -sky's the limit- creation. They just are doing it for GM instead.
It was definately one of the coolest cars I have ever seen. I'd love to check it out in person.

Bob's Mustange was one of them, very surprised he did not mention it. I don't have the magazine in front of me, but there was also I really cool VW Bus salt racer, home built and drive from the east to Bonneville and back, pretty cool I thought. Also, Wheel to Wheels Nova was one, that is what I remember off the top of my head. By the way, I thought EFJAY was an awesome ride, hot rod built!

The GTO made my wee-wee hard. Overall, it was a really cool cross section of cars, and although you might argue that the Holden had the obvious budget edge, there are certainly other small shop built cars that share the same dollar input magnitude. Heck of an effort, in my opinion, cool car. I hope it will be at SEMA for we mere mortals to see.

Congrat's to our members who made the cut, that in itself should make you feel proud.

The GTO btw is the 64 that has been the subject of several threads. It is the road racing red car.

Well.... Now that you mention it....

We are thrilled to have made the top 10. Wayne and I were both walking around with smiles on our face all day.

Now it is off to SEMA. See you all out there.

I picked up a copy of Hot Rod last night for jury duty today. They are still pretty much a drag racing/pro-street publication. They at least did a story on that girl's Camaro who seemed to be a road racer and that GTO supercar. But with all the "big and skinnys" in there I half expected to come across a CARTOONS comic and an order form for Sea Monkeys.

Oh well. At least the mullet heads are happy.

I actually thought it was one of "Hot Rods" best efforts.

The issue I have with the Efigy winning the top spot is in their explanation. They said the car was built by a group of auto enthusiasts similar, in fashion, to many of the top custom builders out there.

Well, I don't know about you, but I have yet to see any custom shop that can come close to the resources available to those at GM. I can just imagine the car that some on this site would build if given the resources and budget of the Holden Efigy. I would like to see them achieve the same results, in the same time frame, but this time working out of the Ring Brothers shop up in Madison Wisconsin.

The Nova will be at SEMA, and I think Kurt is actually going to take it to some local car cruise on Friday night. It is a blast on the streets. Sure gets a lot of double takes :)

The Nova of Kurt Urban is quite the beast. I was [trying] to follow it on the Power Tour in Gainsville when he did an on-ramp romp. It irritated the local cops tremendously. When asked later about the ticket, he responded that he got a reckless driving award for spinning the tires. When pressed further he admitted that the tire spin came in 3rd gear...at around 130!
The SN 65 is an animal as well. At the Street Challenge it was among the fastest cars there and had no problems at all. Damn nice design and execution.
I never get tired of looking at cars like these two. The hidden tricks are the coolest!

Tough topic. I don't know where to begin. Hot Rod Magazines focus leans towards muscle cars, but the title does suggest that it is a hot rod top ten. Okay lets see 10 cars from the past year, no particular order, Richard Ruiter '55 Chevy Convert, Bob Johnson Cuda, John Boyce Bosch built 38 Chevy, Greening built Camaro, Ring Bros black Mustang Fastback, Foose built Impression, Steve Tracy 32 Chrome Roadster, Legens built Willys Pickup, Poteet Cuda built by Troy for salt racing, and Rick Clutter 56 Ford Pickup. Just my opinion and that is off the cuff. I just pulled those cars out of my head. I could back each one up with a reason it should be on the list. Then again who still actually reads HOT ROD. The last time I saw something cool in HOT ROD was 1997 when they had pictures of the Sniper built by Troy. The magazine used to be the pinnacle, but not no more.

I think we are on the same page. I agree with all of your choices though I think I like Greening's 32 better that the camaro. That car had a lot of fresh ideas and the front suspension is way cool. I am surprised that the Ridler winner is not on your list, especially since other great 8 cars did make it.

Okay, I'll give you that one, but that Camaro was a damn nice car. To bad the only place its ever been seen is in a magazine. Would have loved to seen it up at Columbus this year. As for this years Ridler winner, nice car, but sure looks like something I have seen before.

If the camaro had showed up, there would be one less tri-5 in the top 5..... (black 57 or silver 55 post)

"As for this years Ridler winner, nice car, but sure looks like something I have seen before"- Like the Impression with a 35 grille?

I thought so too.

But really it's the top 10 cars featured in Hot Rod. I think most would agree it's not the top 10 cars that were fresh in '06.

I enjoy reading some of the stories in Hot Rod now. I think they've improved it quite a bit recently.
