I need some opinions on if I should use a detroit locker I have. Last weekend I started to do a gear change and when I was taking the ring gear off the carrier the carrier bearings fell off. It seems the last owner machined the carrier so that the bearings didn't have to be pressed on and off making gear changes easier.
I have been getting different opinions on what I should do. Some people have told me to get the surface knurled and it should be ok.
Others have said I should sell it to someone like a drag racer who won't put that many miles on it. They didn't think the knurl would last very long. What would happen if the bearings start spininng on the carrier? would the R&P get damaged?
I really don't won't to buy a new $600 carrier.

I build rear ends as part of the way I make a living.
IMO I would get rid of it.
The bearings have spun on it.
It may be possible that somone ground out the braings and not the carrier to make them slip fit
you can check this by trying new bearings on it.
if you have to pound them on then that was it if the tap on with ligh pressure or fall on then get rifd if the carrier.
It is what it is.
It will cost you more later if the bearing spins and gets loose and causes ring gear failure.

I agree with Maxspeed, most of the time the bearings are honed out not the carrier cut down,I'd try another set of bearings. Is it a power lock, they seem to work alot better then a Detroit Locker on the street anyway

I did try a new set of bearing and they slip on the carrier also.
The locker does not look that old so I assume someone cut it down....maybe it just spun.
Someone suggested getting a new case for the locker but I decided to go with a new power lock instead.

Your smart cookie =)
The power lock is a really nice setup I have them front and rear in my 72 blazer d 60 rr d44 front.
i can hang a wheel of the ground apply a little brake and get full traction to the wheel on the ground.
I also have a P lock in my d60 in my 69 =)
If you are going to buy Gears I recomend Dana gears they setup the best and usually with the shims allready in the rear. (provided it had all the stock shim packs)

Timken does make an under size bearing to fix the problem. You do have to get the carrier turned down a few thou. though. Then your good as new.
If you want the timken # let me know and i will get it when im at work.
