No Steering Wheel................

Check Out the New Mercedes

No Steering wheel - Can you drive with a joystick?
I bet our kids and grandkids probably can. The influence of video games in our lives has really arrived.....

It would be cooler if the joystick came up between your legs, like in a jet.

Unfortunately, I see a lot of room for idiots to under or (more than likely) over correct!

I remember seeing that on a car years ago and thought it was odd, but I don't know if it ever went into production. I think it was a Saab? I can't say for sure, but it was late 80's early 90's. It would be interesting to say the least, but I'd rather have a PS2 controller for the controls!

it was for a show car they made a decade ago. I would think that if they really wanted to implement the idea, they probably would have by now, no?

It would make manufacturing costs lower, since only one interior would have to be made for the whole world. If you got tired of driving, you could just tell the passenger to take over. It also would give you a lot more leg room in smaller cars. I like my steering wheel though, thanks.

I see one big problem. If the passenger can drive then he can also get a DUI. I don't think the Germans would ever implement that.

Most of the newer military jets use a side mounted joystick :bananna2:

How true, But most aerobatic aircraft(for private use,) are still between the leg sticks?

The Cirrus SR 22 that the Yankees pitcher crashed into a building had side mounted sticks. The Pitcher had 95% of his hours in a Cessna which has yokes, very similar to steering wheels. I could not imagine flying without a yoke, all my hours are in a Cessna 150-152-172, and now at the airport we have a 2006 172 SP with Garmin 1000 flat panel avionics. But still has a yoke.

I would say the pitcher and the instructor, were going over the fancy dash, and at 120- 140 miles an hour and big wind gusts, if you take your focus off what is outside the aircraft, for too long(8-20 seconds) around big tall buildings, you will run into something. You do not see Dale Jr. tuning his xm radio while racing, because of this simple fact.

They say the plane was jerking back and forth right before it crashed, with side sticks, I would say they just looked up and screamed holy Spit and both started to try and miss the building. But neither could tell or see which direction the other was pulling, and with little or know time, it was done too late. With yokes they would have seen, felt and began to make the same high G turn in the same direction. IMO, but the crash was going to happen. Lets face it, we all have our time coming, and I believe it is a pre-determined date, that we can not avoid.

I pray they rest in peace.

Anyway I got way off coarse there, way, way off coarse. To make it short, Side sticks, in a car, would SUCK. Give me a steering wheel!!!!!!!!!

As for Military jets, it makes the high G's easier because you are not holding your arms up, although it takes 35 lbs to pull those sticks at high G's, plus they fly for a long time and need the precise control, I would take a F-18 with a side stick? I guess that makes me almost a fence jumper?lolol

As for me I would like a side mount controler but then I was training a long time ago to fly F16's , throttle in one hand ,stick in the other.
As for me with the advent of electric rack and pinion and drive by wire I dont see any problems once you get used to it.
