First of all I would like to thank John McBride for this "quickie" the car is under construction as we speak I know this is a differnet approach but hey like they say it is how you the owner interpret how a car should look, think about it that car already has power windows, power locks, tilt column, ac, hydroboost brake system why not? The drivetrain will be either a factory L98 TPI or a Vortec 4.8 all smog equipment will still be operational it has a airbags all the way around bigger front sway bar, disc brakes in the rear, the interior will consist of bucket seats for the front out of a pontiac Bonneville SC. Sound system provided by USAMPS/RE Audio www.usamps.com (http://www.usamps.com) and www.reaudio.com (http://www.reaudio.com), it is built to be a cruiser but look good going down the road, what do you think? The rollers will consist of 20x8.5 for the front and 22 x 10 for the rear.

It will be a unique vehicle, but the boring body lines of those particular wagons don't really appeal to me. The truck sized bumpers also take away from the overall look. Maybe a rolled pan out back and a smoothed/molded in front bumper?

The lines on the '70 Malibu wagon are more appealing than the rolling blocks of this period. Just my opinion!

I might try my hand at molding the pan in the rear but the main goal of this wagon is to do it on the cheap with out spending $50k and having something that can be cruised in on a "B-U-D-G-E-T" with out getting too crazy! But I like the fact eveyone has an opinon on it, I realize some will like it others won't.

I think it's pretty cool! Good for you, very very unique. I don't think the body lines are that bad. Just taking that awful wood grain off improves it. Though, I'd have to agree with the bumpers. It would be great to shrink the front and roll pan the rear.

Thanks Ben I was able to pull the front bumper in another 2" that rear one is pain but who know what will happen after an 18 pack, some extra sheet metal laying around in the shop and a plasma cutter??????:seizure:

I really really dig it. So much avalable for those cars. Lots of room, and you get to blow by all the people in there damn "crossovers".

I've always wanted to do that too.

Ya know when Larry asked me to do this I kinda scratched my head but I was thinkin'....alright, a challenge. As Larry has already started to do - you start out with little things that you can do to improve it a lot. Keeping the mods simple and not trying to make it something it's not is really what you need to keep in mind especially if it's gotta be budget.
Yeah it's a brick, no it's not sexy but that doesn't mean it can't be cool. The first thing I try to explain to some that may not relize it - wheels and stance WILL make a huge difference and a bigger set of rollers on this big wagon would help a lot. Bigger but not ridiculous sized wheels really help to reel in the lengthy body on this car. Larry and I agree that 20" wheels and tires would be the way to go. They also help to take attention off of the guard rail bumpers. Another thing you can do - Larry's doin it already - is bringin' in the bumpers tight. Narrowing them would help too but doin' it on the cheap and simple pushin' 'em in will be enough. Also, I suggested doing a silver blue metallic color or something similar would help to blend the bumpers in with the body so they help them to be less noticable yet still keep a little brightwork on the car.
Shaving the door handles and removing side trim also helps to clean up the ride. The wood grain removal is a no brainer.
Even though it's not gonna be for everyone, I'd sure like to see a set of 20"x10" wheels under the back of that wagon!:drive1:

No damn you!!! I've had one of those thing built in my head for a couple of years!! :banghead:

Seriously though, very cool! I'm lookin' to get one of those wagons this winter. I'd love a '77 or a '78 since those could be had with the 403 Olds motors. Not the craziest motor around, but it should pull my boat quite well. I was thinkin' 16" or 17" on the wheels, C-5 'Vette brakes on the front (easy as I already have the modded spindles). Dunno about the rear. Buckets and a console. Some fat bars and a nice lowering job (not as low as your pic though). No roof rack (done on the cheap though as I am going to try not to paint it).

I think it's cool!

There's something to be said about adding attitude to an unassuming looking vehicle. I have to admit, initially when Larry asked me about doin' the sketch there were crickets at first on my end...but after letting it soak in for a minute and picturing it in my head I thought that there could be something still cool here. While I was sketching it, I remembered the stripped down black police issue 1985 LTD in Men in Black. It looked like nothing special and then he cranked it up and it sounded like it had 1000 horsepower - I thought that was hysterical! Immediately I thought that that's cool, I wanna drive that to work everyday! LOL!

I know exactly what you mean about the crickets. I've had that happen a lot lately! LOL I'm always up for a challenge!

Any idea how your going to fix the door mis-match problem all of these wagons seem to have? What I mean is, if you site down the body, they all seem to be pinched in between the front and back doors.

Not quite sure what you mean? I have not seen this issue on the wagon. the gap between the doors are perfectly fine from front to back.

Well, then I guess you won't have to worry about it! :hand: I've just noticed this on a lot of them, kinda looks like the car is pinched in where the back of the front door meets the front of the back door.

Great project! If you wanna do something a bit different, you can tint the windows and paint the B and C-pillars flat black, like the Bimmer wagons. I think that would look sharp!

Well its been a while since I got to post in here but she is at the paint shop, I stripped here all down and also gutted the interior. I am stuck on a color combination but I will figure that out at a later date this is going to be a nice demo vehicle for my company I will keep you guys posted.
