I'm thinking of going to Easter Island, and subsequently have to stop in Santiago for at least two nights. Anybody ever been there?

i have been there. it was interesting to see and can be way fun if you are single :) i was in the navy and hit three ports. i cant recall the name of them all now but it was fun.

You have been to Santiago, or just three places in Chile? Do a lot of people speak English as you recall? Did it seem as safe as any other town?

it was safe and they did speak some english. a good spanish / english distionary helped alot. I have been there and it was fun.
