By the way, all the birds on here are sweeet. I really like the fact that other people are doing cool things to there birds. I really felt alone, until I found this site. I was on other sites and they are really uptight about doing anything, and I mean anything pro-touring to (MY) car. No, I'm am not crying. Maybe a couple of tears but that is not crying. Ok, I cried

Those seats are from a 2000 camaro ss. They are 25th anniversary editions thAt are white leather. They easy to install. The front holes line up and they back needs a bracket made to reposition the holes. Camaros.net has a thread on it.
They are so comfy and much lighter than the factory seats. Even my drivers that has six way power is lighter.
Baby seat is held in with a ratching strap hooked the the anchor bolts.... It's just tempory for curising around the block..

Thanks a lot for the info, I wanted those seats but people keep talking me out of getting them. I'm in!!

I suggest only getting the camaro seats since the firebird seats look way to modern. You can get used camaro seats for less than 100$ for a set then get them recovered to match your car.

Well.....how much time do you have? Since I didn't know anyone that did this mod before there was a lot of head scratching in the planning stages. The hardest part was where do you start? I decided to use the shifter as the anchor point since I had no choice for the location. Set the console on the shifter and mounted it. Then started trimming the sub-dash until it met up with the console. Once I had a plan it took about a week doing the work at night in my garage. The most challenging part was the electronics. Making sure all the systems were working properly. Again this was done in my garage at night and on the weekends. The wiring took quite a bit longer. I studied the service manuals for days and familiarized myself with all the electrical components before I started hacking up the harnesses.

Did you have to do anything to the dash ends?(where it ends near the door hinges)

Thanks, Trey. I've seen modern interiors in some 1st gens and they kinda looked like they were just stuck in there and didn't flow with the car, and my goal was to try and make it look like it belonged in the car or that it was built that way.

Stunning!...Love the color scheme on those birds.

Yes John the ends were modified here is how I did it:

The ends on the GTO slanted in to allow the door to close and meet up with the driver and passenger air vents

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/10/27994287715-1.jpg

So I added some foam to make the ends parallel to the doors and covered it in fiberglass and shaped them.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/05/27994290970-1.jpg

In this picture you can see the end. I used 22 gauge metal to form an end cap and covered that separately and attached it to the dash to close out the end.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/10/27994290974-1.jpg

On the door panel I recessed the panel to fit with the dash so when the doors are closed they mesh together

Great work on that dash. I love the look...I'm not sure that I can pull all of that off like you did.

Sure you can...judging from your work on your car you have the skills. It just takes a little planning and getting the process in your head how you want to do it....after all in the end its just metal, plastic and such. I have never done fiberglass work before or interior work before so I read up on it on the net and went to as many sites as I could to get ideas. I also played around with test pieces to develop some sort of technique before I actually worked on the pieces on the car. There are a couple of fiberglass forums that I got a lot of information from.

The interior uses materials that I'm not familiar with..ie fabric, vinyl, foam, ect...

eh, maybe I could try....I just hate to ruin a dash that I spent good money on....LOL

Nice that it's a vert so people can appreciate how nice it is. Makes me want to go tear the stock deluxe interior out of my 67 RS SS vert! Must resist...... too many ongoing projects. LOL

Thanks Sam! Yes, its DuPont Chromalusion...I forget the specific color name as its been so long. It goes from dark green, to blue to purple. The car was originally dark green and this color is usually dark green in the sun so I thought it would look good. The coil overs work beutifully and really helped nail the stance. The rear has new leaves and custom made drop blocks.

Now on to the next phase of adding lightness!

Thank You Very Much,

I thought it out pretty hard.

"Beautiful job! Did you get that horn botton custom made? That a nice touch. I also like the hotwheel rims."

I have a buddy with a machine shop in St. Paul that has a machine shop and is a Firebird nut (last count was 13). We bought a Billet Specialties button and put it on the lathe to cut the dome flat. Then he had his CAD guy whittle the Aztec bird in the flat of the horn button on a CNC mill. I found him the very best bottle of brandy I could. Still love it. Favorite part of the interior.

The wheels are 18" Intro Vista's that have been widened. I saw them on AJ's 68 and had to have them. Still have the ralley II timeless style. Dustin is a sponsor on ProTouring.com and helped identify them and helped get them quicker.

My builder made the enclosures in the car. I picked the shallow JL subs to still have some space left in the trunk for a spare tire on occasion. There are three hides in the trunk alone.

We used some source one kicks that came with 4X6 speakers and I assured him that it wouldn't work with the big amps. After less than a week they were clipping and got really smelly. I just got the car back two days ago.

Brian from Scream'n Performance made us up a set of the kick panels.

https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57007

http://www.screaminperformance.net/camaro_kick_panels.htm

My guy wanted to use the roddoors and they had gone under by then. These put the speakers in a much better position than the roddoors.

We were going to cover them in black leather, but they were perfect out of the box. A quick scuff and paint and they are in.

My ears are still bleeding! I love it. Neighbors, not so much.

The 4 x 6 approach is easy, but junk. This rounds out the fronts so much better. Day and night.

Here's my 78 Firebird project still in planning and research. Had the car since 1984. Lowered 3 in front and 2 in in back. currently has a 300 hp 355 SBC. Acquiring a 3.91 gear disc brake rear now and then wheels/brakes are next. Powertrain will probably add AFR heads, FAST EFI, and 4L80E w/paddle shifters. There's a part of me that feels like shoehorning a 500 hp EFI SBF 347 I have sittin in the black LX in the pic just to make people talk.

Nope wasn't at Autorama.

My EFI is just cobbled together from parts I had laying around... The Edelbrock Victor EFI manifold, Keihin Injectors and BBK throttle are new. But the rest is homebuilt by me: harness, linkage, various used AN fittings off old race cars. Oh, and an old Haltech F3. (Remember DOS 3.1?) Works nicely though.

Critter tell us more about your guages. The speedo and tach sure aren't stock, but the others look stock.

Mike, thanks, that's why it was rescued. Not many SD TAs with a vinyl top.

Jeremy, the speedo and tach came from SpeedHut.com. I have nothing but praise for those guys. I had problems with the initial purchase. The tach was bouncing like Tigger on a meth rush and the speedo wouldn't read the signal from the TCI transmission control computer. They built me a new tach with noise suppression built in to counter the noisy HEI and took back the original speedometer when I decided to go around the TCI unit with a GPS speedometer.

The best thing about these gauges is that I didn't have to hack up the dash. I used a spare instrument cluster and cut the plastic plate that fits behind the speedo and tach. The gauges mount directly to the bezel with retaining rings. A little creative wiring and I was done.

The speedometer may go back one more time. They tell me they can modify it to give me an indicator for bright lights and brake warning light. That's the 2 things I lost with the change. Oh, and the GPS speedometer records 1/4 mile time as well. :) :) :)

I posted a couple pics of my car about 3 years ago in this thread but figured I'd put up a couple recent ones since I've changed the interior since with a full cage, race seats, fire systems etc. and I'm going to change the exterior appearance soon, so it won't look like this any more. It'll still be red but new wheels, brakes, tires, and maybe a few other surprises. An Alfa Romeo lost an engine just as I was about to pass it at the Palm Beach International road course and whatever chemicals came out of it damaged the paint on my hood and scoop, so thats what the spots are in the paint of the first pic. I've got a different hood I want to use anyway so I guess nows the time since I couldn't buff out the stains. Anyway here's a few pics from the past couple years of the car in it's current state.

Thanks critter! It sits now as I envisioned 10 years ago when I first saw the Hotchkis F-71 Camaro and dreamed of what I wanted do to the car. Other than the cage and safety equipment it's looked pretty much the same for 6-7 years now and it's time for a change. Luckily, winning the Performance Therapy Photo Contest is giving me an opportunity to do upgrades I wouldn't have done for a long time. Rushforth Wheels, Baer Brakes and a new set of Yokohamas all at the same time!

Srh3trinity: Just got the brakes from Baer so I can get started soon. I've been using The 14 Car as my daily driver so I need to switch things around and make some working room in the garage. Haven't decided which Rushforths for sure yet. I've gotta decide pretty quick though because as soon as the brakes are installed I can measure for backspacing and order the wheels. Thanks! Thats the portable extinguisher I keep in the car on the street to put out fires! Used 2 so far putting out other peoples cars and neither offered to replace them! My fire systems are controlled by the pull knobs next to the shifter. I've been driving the car daily and found that with the 6 points on, the only place I can reach to put my glasses, phone, butts, etc. is behind the seat by reaching around below the door side shoulder brace. Can't even open the center console strapped in. Ya, I smoke in the car. The windows are always wide open and whoever gets the car when I'm dead if I don't wreck it can bitch about restoring the inside of the ashtray if they want. I won't hear them. LOL

Everything on the side of the car has been shaved, the only thing I decided to keep were the Pontiac side markers. To tell you the truth, a few of Chris Fesler's builds have influenced my direction lately so I've taken quite a bit of the trim pieces and powder coated them semi/gloss black as I've done w/the side markers. In the end I will also purchase wheels that will follow the build theme. Thanks for the comment.

Okay... who was it? I spied a medium/dark blue metalic '68 or '69 'bird on a trailer today in south Bradenton/north Sarasota (on 63rd Ave E approaching Lockwood Ridge). Definitely kinda pro-touring, lowered on some very pretty billet wheels, "ram air" hood w/hood tach. I'm just curious if it is anyone here... it'd be nice to know if we have a pro-touring presence in the area.

True, there are a few shops overhere that carry standard parts. But as soon as you're thinking of upgrading some things then you'll have to get it from the States. Which means Transport costs and Taxes. It easily adds 40% to the bill. Big parts can easily take up to a month to arrive as there being send over by ship.

But hey, it's hobby right? :fingersx:

My 77 Trans Am

Whats the wheel size and tire size? love it!!!

fiream400
04-18-2012, 09:14 PM
Here's mine. 77 Trans Am with the rare rear console for those who care about such things. It was a base black/black trans am with the deluxe interior and ralley II wheels. During the first build, in high school, I made it a special edition clone except for painting the trim black. It was fun and had around 300-325hp Pontiac 400, th-375b, 3.23 gears, Hotchkis coils and swaybars and ws6 spec leafs. Plans for the future are 400+hp from the Pontiac motor, an overdrive auto(maybe 5 speed manual), better brakes, subframe connectors, solid body bushings and other bracing, Cerullo xr sport seats, 2 or 4 point cage. I already have the year one package tray, door panels and 17" snowflakes. I plan to run nitto 555 275/40s up front and 285/40s in the rear. There is still a lot of planning do be done before I start turning wrenches again. That and saving up money; Edelbrock heads for a Pontiac are ridiculously expensive. I can do an entire aluminum top end with cam/valvetrain on the 302 in my other project for just a little more than what the E-heads cost....

now / slightly taken apart and in need of some body/paint work

ryeguy2006a

Those are C5 front brakes and I believe they are 12.8" brakes. I bought the brackets and hubs from Keith at Custom Works. I ended up getting the rest of the parts here and there when I saw them at a good price. Used rotors for $20, pair of calipers and abutments $75. He is a great guy and he was there everytime on the phone if I had a question. I would recommend him very highly and he has very competitive prices.

Still kicking myself!:hand:

Thanks for the kind words all. Anyway, I don't get on the PT site that much anymore because my car pales in comparison to most of the birds on this site. It is really pretty basic. Up front, I run a 245/45-17 on 17X8 ARE 200s wheels, 1LE brake package with Hawk pads, GW del-a-lums on stock upper and lower arms. Shocks are Koni classics controlling trimmed Hotchkis springs. A NOS set of Rancho adjustible sway bars keep it flat. GW body bushings, SFC's and PTFB G-braces keep it solid. A 1991 Trans Am GTA steering box keeps it stright. The rear has 255/50-17s also on 17X8's, Koni's on stock springs (w/Adams mod) and a Rancho bar. Brakes are aluminum drums. Engine is your basic 455, SRP pistons, Scat rods on a stock "N" crank. Cam is a rev happy solid lifter cam from Crower as is the rest of the valve train. Heads are ported iron while intake and exhaust is a Torker II and custom Tri-Y headers leading to an X-pipe and out a set of Magnaflows. It all goes through a TKO600 to a 3.73 geared 10 bolt fitted with an Eaton posi.

Inside are Corbeau GTII's, a stock 85 TA steering wheel and all Autometer phantoms. Highlight is probably the old school Hooker chrome show bar. The car has been rewired with an EZ wiring kit. Outside, the Formula stuff is all replaced with restored TA stuff and a VFN fiberglass hood.

Currently, the motor is down as I cracked a cylinder wall and am looking to upgrade to Aluminum heads. I just got the short block back which blew a pretty big hole in the budget for this year so I am not in much of a hurry to get it on the road.

This pic makes me want to order a stripe kit for mine tomorrow! Headlights and hood pins are a nice touch!

Thanks John, seeing that I stole your color code, the stripe would only be fair. I would order one of the new stripe kits from 165th over on the Performance Years site if I had it over to do again as it is dimensionally correct and actually costs less. Anyway, the hood pins are necessary due to the fiberglass hood. If I didn't need them, they wouldn't be there. Interestingly enough, I could not stand any of the available plates so these are actually aluminum plate with countersunk allen screws and they are from a Factory Five Cobra supplier. My second choice would be a set of Daytona/Superbird repos but they are like $100. Headlights are from my late father-in-law for a Christmas present while he was alive. They will be upgraded somewhere along the line but I felt pretty obligated to get them on the car. They were pretty expensive at the time.

At Laguna Seca a couple of years ago. Broke a forged roller rocker that day in the third session. Got a couple good pics before though.
The second pic is te way it sits now with the new hood. Still gotta put some color on it one of these days.

Took a few more of my Formy. I really can't wait for the new wheels to go on! Should be done by the end of the week. Then, some cleanup and buffing, window tint, then focus on suspension.

Had some fun with it last night at a local gathering, though!

Father In Law's car he bought in 1994, My wife and I bought it before he sold to somebody random, to purchase a bass boat. Sat outside in the Minnesota elements for about 5 years before it was brought back into a garage for the last two. it was being used as a storage rack when we bout it 3 months ago. sad. but here it is as of now.
