Id like to buy a golf kart for the wife and I and was wondering what is the best way to go. Gas engine is a must and Id like to add lift suspention along with the nice ATV tires.
Does anyone have ideas for used carts and the parts for them. Id like to do the work myself just for the satisfaction of.Maybe even a paint job of flames.

It depends on what you are planning to do with it. I would not own an electric golf cart, too much hassle. I would not jack one up or put ATV tires on it either, make them handle very bad at speed. I have a Club Car that I bought used from a local cart dealer several years ago and really have had no problems with it. Several members have seen it, and it was even in PHR a couple months ago in the Year One Experience coverage.
Without writting a book here, if you buy a pre 97 club car, the engines run in the opposite direction than they do now. You can buy different gears for the rear end, put 10" wheels on it (as opposed to the factory 8"s) and it will run about 33 miles an hour. Then you can change the 290cc to a 350cc and get it to 38 mph. Then you get a friend to certify you have turn signals, brake lights, horn, w/s wiper, seat belts, DOT tires, rear view mirrors, and take that to the local tag office, see another friend, and next thing you know, you have a licensed, street legal vehicle. Get insurance on it and then really piss the local law enforcement off.....lol (ask me how I know)
Most events and NASCAR tracks are really cutting down on letting you bring your cart to the event, too many people have been run over by dumb asses.
I have about 5000 (seriously, at least that many) street miles on mine and would not sell it for anything. It is the best transportation I could have during car show events here. Pretty cool to pass cars running 35mph on the road too while making a dount run to KK.

EZ GOs have two cylinders vs. my one banger, but it is hard to do much "trick stuff" to the heads and they will drop a valve if you treat them like I have mine. I know nothing about the Yamahas, none around here.
Most golf courses lease their carts and trade them in about every two years, so probably you will find that a local cart dealer will have/will be getting these old carts and refurbishing them. I really doubt you can get a GOOD 96 anymore, but then again, there may be new "improvements" you can make to the newer ones by now. Go to Club Car's website and search for a dealer near you.
BTW, you can even get an IDIDIT steering column for a golf cart these days. I have had one since Frank did a GP here a year and a half ago, but have not installed it yet....lol
Bill,
Considering the play in the wheel from doing wheelies, isn't it time to change the steering column?!? :drive2:

I have considered the same thing, but honestly, 40mph is fast enough, it would be almost impossible to control at 50. The steering is just to sensitive to push any faster unless you are going in a straigh line. Remember, steering is similar to a go-cart, but the center of gravity is much higher. I bet on that is jacked up high is even worse.

There was a guy down here that took a cart and built a custom A arm suspension that widened it over a total of 2 feet and put a gsxr 750 motor and tranny in it. He said it does over 65 mph in the dunes....it is pretty sweet but all of that work he might as well have built a custom mini rail.
Oh also Tom Sneva (Indy car driver) has a golf club here called the 500 club, years ago he built a golf cart with a 1100 cc street bike motor and clocked it on Pinnacle Peak road at over 100 mph. The cart was lowered and had a dirt track wing on top of it. I should go hit a few balls and see if he still has it in the clubhouse.
