I am torn between the two motors. I am considering the Sallee version of the 502 with 625 horse or crate zz502. Shafiroff seems to have a great reputation and better warranty. Anybody running any of these combos? Any issues? I have read a lot of posts about oil consumption on the 502 that worries me a little. Also will the victor junior that is on the two higher powered motors fit under my stock cowl induction hood on my 69 Camaro?

Most oil consumption depends on the clearance's the builder use's when assembling the motor.

Any of the engine are good pieces. The 540 will make more TQ than a 502,Hood clearance will be close with a factory cowl, will most likely need a dropped base air cleaner.

I've seen alot of posts concerning the quality (or lack there of) of the "production line" assembly techniques in GM's crate engines. Loose fasteners on critical parts, poor tolerances, etc. Not sure about the Sallee stuff but if it were my $, I'd go with the Shafiroff engine.

I am leaning towards the Shafiroff. My only dilema is how much horsepower will these cars hold up to without causing stress cracks in my brand new paint job? Looking at 650 horse for the daily driver motor. I am having the DSE or other frame connectors put in. The 502 is milder and wouldn't stress the car as much.

As long as the frame is strengthed and you aren't doing 5g launch at the track, you wont have any stress.Ceckout BMR they are a site sponsor,if have hi quality parts for a 69.

Well,

I know there is a member here that just got a GM 572 and
its been a nightmare for him so far,i would go with a 540
from Shafiroff,i think he has some good feedback, and he
has a good rep,and probably would treat you better than
GM would if you needed help or a warranty issue if such
would come up.

Good luck with your new engine!

I am pretty sure I will go with the World Products 509 or 540 now. Seems like the perfect set up for me at the right price. Any comments on these engines?

There's been a few commented on at chevelles.com.

Do you have the option to have a motor built locally?

Unfortunately my car is being built in Ohio so I can't do a local build unless I want to have him send me a roller. I've decided against the 502 thanks for the offer though.
